Class History
On August 30, 1948, twenty-five bright and shining little students entered the halls of Edina High
School looking for Miss Minor and the first grade room.  We were all so starched and polished
that we hesitated to sit down.  The following people made up that first class:

Billy Blake                    Lois Kay Inskip                Hillis Prather                 Eloise McKinney
James Breckenfeld      Agnes Karhoff                 Kathy Prebe
Carol Jean Bowen       Mary Margaret Klote       Jay Rosenberger
Leroy Cardwell            Dick Latimer                    Shirley Rowlinson
Sandra Edwards          Phyllis Martin                  Joe Sens
Judy Gibson                Lonnie Mason                 Jackie Sharpe
Shirley Jane Giles       John Miller                      Terry Shumate
Janice Hettinger          Richard Parrish               Gerald Whitmire

The next year when we returned for another step up the ladder of education, Miss Mauck greeted us.
Roll Call revealed that James Breckenfeld, Carol Jean Bowen, Sandra Edwards , Shirley Jane Giles,
Lois Kay Inskip, Shirley Rowlinsen and Jackie Sharpe were not with us.  We glad to see Kathleen Cannon,
James Hettinger and Gary McCabe had joined our class.

Punishment in the second grade consisted mainly of taking our red chairs and sitting out in the hall.
Sometimes there was quite a line out there.  A picnic at the Kirksville park concluded our activities.

Next fall we joined Miss Cook in the third grade room.  We had lost James Roberson and had gained
Rita Sandman, Donald Thompson and Junior Sams.  Garrell Bangert joined us during this year.
Wonder if Donald remembers what Miss Cook said to him when he got on the wrong bus?  Again
we enjoyed an outing to Kirksville when school closed.

The first Monday in September 1951 found us at the other end of the hall in Miss Costello's room.
Multiplication tables were the subject of conversation this year.  Miss Costello said that they must
be mastered before we were ready for fifth grade.  Larry Blacksmith, Karen Stone and Eunice Cody
joined us this year.  Judy Gibson moved to Kansas City to live while her father finished his studies
to be a doctor.

The fall of 1952 found us hurring upstairs for the fifth grade room of Mrs. Sparks.  My, we felt
grown up!  In fact, we were just one door from high school.  (We thought!)  Wonder if the three
boys remember about the snowballing that winter?

We enjoyed a field trip to the water  works, where the commisioner explained the plant to us.
Terry thought he knew the shortest way back but it proved to be the longest.  Do you remember, Terry?
This year we spent our last school day at the roller rink in Kirksville.

August 1953 rolled around and we were back downstairs with Mrs. Kennedy.  We found some
changes when roll was taken.  Hillis Prather was gone and Judy Mattocks and Nancy Bishop
had joined our ranks.

When school opened in 1954 we found ourselves upstirs again with Mrs. Moore as our teacher.
Checking our "Who is Here Calendar" we discovered that Norma Jean Lillard was missing and
Garrell Bangert, Donald Thompson, Hillis Prather and Sandra Edwards had joined us. Sandra was
with us only  a few weeks.  That winter we had a checker tournament and Leroy Cardwell
was proclaimed the champion.  Another trip to the roller rink wound up the year's work.

Our last year in grade school found us with Mrs. Latimer.  During the year we had some wonderful
parties.  The first was a Halloween party at Garrell Bangert's home.  His brother brought a tractor
and hay frame and took us to their home.  We enjoyed a wiener roast and spent the evening playing
games.

Later we were invited to Joe Sens' home for another party.  Mrs. Sens had decorated their home
and table beautifully and served us a lovely lunch.  Of course, we had the usual fun at the Christmas
and Valentine's Day parties.

Civics was the one subject that we stressed about very much during this year.  When the final test
was given, everyone passed with good grades.  Several boys and girls went out for baketball and
were chosen for the junior high team.
