He was an only child and grew up in Bag End, Hobbiton. His father died in 2926 and his mother in 2934, so Bilbo dwelt alone in Bag End for seven years. Here he led the quiet and pleasant life of a Hobbit. This uneventful lifestyle came to an abrupt halt in the spring of 2941 when Bilbo met Gandalf. Together with the wizard and thirteen dwarves he set out on a quest to kill the dragon Smaug and reclaim the Kingdom under the Mountain. On their way to the lonely mountain Bilbo and his company met trolls, orcs, goblins, elves and the last living dragon in Middle-earth. Bilbo also acquired a golden ring from the creature Gollum, whom he met in a cave deep under the Misty Mountains. The ring was magic a one; it turned people invisible when they put it on. After the dragon was slain Bilbo went back home, loaded with gold and other treasures. Here he resumed his quiet life and in 2989 he adopted his cousin Frodo. In 3001 Bilbo held his 111th birthday-party. At the end of his birthday-speech he put on his ring and vanished. He left his home and all his other possessions to Frodo, including his magic ring that had given him an unnatural long life. Gandalf later discovered that Bilbo�s ring was the One Ring that belonged to Sauron. Bilbo left the Shire and went to live with the elves in Rivendell. Here he stayed until the end of the War of the Ring. In the year 3021 of the Third Age he sailed with Frodo, Galadriel, Elrond and Gandalf to the Undying Lands. Bilbo wrote several books, including most of the Red Book that was left in Sam�s protection when Frodo and Bilbo left. |
