Scroll Seven: Alliances
By Richard LeBlanc
How much time had passed - she couldn't know for sure - but when Markys slowly opened her eyes - she knew that she was still alive. She had grown a bit since she was on the beach - she now had the body of a girl about sixteen years of age.
"How did I?" Markys began as she looked around the cave she was in. it was then that she saw Enchantress. "You again? You were there on the beach," she stated. Enchantress nodded. "Can you speak?" she asked seriously. Again she nodded. "Then do so! How did I get here? Why am I here?" she demanded.
"I - I saw you were in trouble," she began. Markys stormed over and grabbed Enchantress by her blouse and pushed her against the cavern wall. "Please be calm. That Chaos guy has people everywhere," she reminded. Markys glared at the girl before her.
"Do you know who I am?" Markys asked coldly. Enchantress nodded. "Then you know that if you fuck with me - I will make you pray for death to take you," she added as she let go of the terrified teen.
"I - I just wanted to help," Enchantress muttered timidly.
"Oh really? You wanted to help me out of the kindness of your heart? Bull! Give me one good reason why I should believe you," she retorted. Enchantress sighed as she closed her eyes. As she did - she could see the horrific images that Markys had shown Enchanter in her past life.
"Because - I know how you are hurting - how you are suffering," she began. Markys walked over and punched Enchantress across the face sending her to the floor.
"You don't know anything," Markys hissed.
"I - I know how," she began as Markys kicked her in the stomach. Enchantress coughed as she timidly looked up at the enraged sorceress before her. In her mind she could see images of her screaming at her. She could see Markys attacking her - and killing her. Enchantress screamed out as she curled up in a ball on the cavern floor.
Markys looked at the cringing girl.
"What are you trying to prove?" Markys asked.
"Nothing - just - wanted to help," Enchantress sobbed.
"On your feet," Markys ordered. The girl staggered a bit. She couldn't stand up straight because of the pain she was feeling where Markys had kicked her. Markys studied the girl's features and scowled. "Tydiss - she sent you,' she almost spat.
"No - I swear," she stammered.
"You are from the valley," she pointed out.
"Yes," she answered.
"Why - why would you?" Markys began but stopped. "You - left paradise - to come here - to help me?" she asked in modest disbelief.
"Are you going to kill me?" Enchantress nervously asked.
"Part of me wants to - I can't explain it," Markys admitted as she placed her hand on the girl's cheek. "What do you know about me? Lie - and I will hurt you in ways you will never forget," she warned.
"I - I know that you once lived in the valley. I - know that you - are Tydiss' sister," she began. Markys quietly laughed as she walked away.
"Was - but pray tell continue," she muttered.
"I know that - you - hated some guy named Enchanter - and that," she began as Markys spun around and glared at her. "That it was because of him that - you turned to some demon in the mountains," she said - lying - but knowing it was something Markys believed. The hate in the eyes of Markys began to melt away. "I know that - you have suffered at the hands of demons and other frightening beasts," she continued as she lowered her eyes. She looked up when she head Markys sniffle.
"You know," she muttered. "Then you know - that there is nothing anyone can do to save me. That bastard Enchanter saw to that," she added. Enchantress slowly dropped to her knees and bowed her head.
"I may not be Enchanter - but - I want to help you," she offered. Markys wiped tears from her eyes as she looked over at the young djinn. A noticeable bruise was forming on her face where she had been hit.
"Why? Don't you know what I am?" Markys asked.
"You are in pain. That is all I care about," she replied.
"You must be stupid. Go back to the valley," she muttered as she turned her back to the kneeling djinn.
"If - if you don't want my help - I will leave. But I pray that you don't," she replied.
"Why?" Markys asked in modest disgust.
"Because - I - I see in you something worth saving - or worth trying to. Please give me that chance,' she requested.
"Why is this so important to you? Did you get exiled? Am I some sort of test for redemption for you to return?" she asked untrustingly. Enchantress shook her head.
"They did not say - but - I know that they didn't want me to go," she answered.
"You - by the dark gods - you actually," Markys began as she leaned against the wall for support. "You actually - want to help me," she muttered in serious disbelief.
"If you would have me," she replied passively.
"Not since my sister," Markys muttered. "How do you know - I won't kill you?" she asked curiously. Enchantress held her hands on her lap and did her best not to shake.
"I don't," she admitted.
"And you would still help me?" she asked.
"I know it must sound stupid - but yes," she replied. Markys slid down to her knees and tried to make sense of the strange djinn that was before her. She quietly laughed as tears rolled down her face.
"How? How could you help me? Why feed me hope when I know there is none?" she asked timidly. Enchantress looked over at Markys and smiled.
"I can only imagine what it is like to live without hope. I would not wish such a thing on anyone. But if there is a way - some way - that I can - I will. You deserve it," Enchantress replied some of the fear escaping.
"I deserve what I get," Markys muttered. "If you know me - you know what I have done," she rebutted. It was then that she felt a hand on her shoulder. She looked up and saw Enchantress kneeling before her.
"Why do you carry such hurt in your heart?" she asked.
"What do you want from me?" Markys emotionally melted down.
"I want to reach in you and take out everything that is causing you this pain. No one deserves to suffer - not even you," she reassured. Markys could feel her cheeks redden. Not since Lord Arachnid had anyone cared about her.
"You really mean that," Markys said as she moved her shaking hand up to Enchantress's cheek. "I - I don't deserve such kindness," she muttered.
"Are you afraid?" Enchantress asked.
"Terrified," Markys surprisingly admitted.
"Why?" she asked.
"The last time I felt this way about someone - it hurt me - bad," she answered.
"You really loved him," Enchantress whispered.
"I - I don't know why I am telling you this," Markys said as she nervously laughed.
"Because I'm cute?" Enchantress suggested. Markys quietly laughed as she found herself staring into the young djinn's eyes. "Will you give me a chance to help you?" she asked seriously.
"What is your name?" Markys asked.
"Enchantress," she answered.
"It suits you," she commented. Enchantress lowered her eyes as she could feel herself blush. "Uhm - would - would you mind if - if I?" she hesitantly asked.
"I - I haven't," Enchantress modestly began. In her mind she could see images of the two of them kissing in her past life. Her heart raced as she found herself being drawn to Markys. "Okay," she whispered as the two began to kiss.
