Landow - We know almost nothing about our family name, only that it started out as Murnikas. Rob's grandfather was born Salman Marnikas in Russia. We don't know what city, then immigrated to Lithuania (the Pale) to avoid serving in the czar's army for 25 years. Salman married Freidl, Rob's grandmother. We don't know what her maiden name was. Family lore says she was the sole surviving child in her family, having been bathed in milk by her mother. Her parents starved to death in World War I. She went to work for Salman, whose wife was ill, to take care of the children. He married her when he was about 60 and she was about 20 (+/-). The elder children, and we don't know how many of these there were, were the ones who moved to the United States and changed the family name. They brought their father, Salman, and his wife and their new half-brother, Abraham, over in 1923. This was in the last year before immigration to the United States was shut down and heavily restricted. The elder children admonished the newlyweds not to have any more children, but shortly thereafter were born Rob's father, Henry, and then his sister, Lillian. Rob's father was raised in Williamsburg, N.Y., a neighborhood of Brooklyn.

WEINBERG - Rob's mother was born Beatrice Weinberg in East New York. Her father was Benjamin Weinberg, who was married to Rose Weiner, daughter of Max Weiner and Pessie Weiner.

JACKSON - As much as we DON'T know about the Landows, we know about Eden's family. The Jacksons were early residents of Clarksville (Montgomery County), Tenn. Her paternal grandfather was Green Perry Jackson, Jr., son of Green Perry Jackson and Beulah Rudolph Jackson. Beulah and Green were first cousins. The Rudolphs were a well-off shade tobacco growing family. Shade tobacco is a kind of tobacco grown in the shade and used for wrapping cigars.

BEENE-Eden's paternal grandmother was Martha Naomi Beene, daughter of Tennessee settler families that participated in such early notable historical events as the Watauga Conference, gunsmithing in Jonesborough, Tenn., the battle of Kings Mountain in North Carolina, which cut off Cornwalis in the West and turned the tide of the American Revolution in the frontier. Every generation of this family from 1764 to the present is buried together in the Bean-Ralston Graveyard in Sweeten's Cove, Tenn., less than a mile from the farm where they lived. More of these family names, all with fascinating early Tennessee histories include GILLIAM, BIBLE, PATTON, RAULSTON, HEIFNER, WOMACK.

CHRISTIAN - Eden's paternal grandfather was William Henry Christian, son of newspaperman William Henry Christian, whose wife was Maude Medlock Christian. The Christian family had newspaper ink their blood. His father, Elam Christian, was a charter member of the Georgia Press Association. He had been an early Methodist minister, but was shot in the neck in the Civil War, and turned to his newspaper skills. He started papers all over Georgia after the war, as a law had been passed that every county had to have a paper to publish the legal notices. His father-in-law had been Augustus P. Burr, newspaper owner in Macon, having eloped with daughter Helen Burr. The Burrs were descended from Benjamin Burr, believed to be the uncle of Aaron Burr, and a co-founder of Hartford, Conn., as part of the Winthrop Expedition. William Henry Christian's wife, Maude Medlock Christian, is the daughter of pioneer Georgians, the granddaughter of a charter resident of Gwinnett County. She also is the descendant of Elizabeth Tyler, a cousin of President John Tyler, and Elizabeth Hudson, whose ancestor was the father of Henry Hudson and a financier of the East India Co. and resident of Hempstead, N.Y., as far back as the early 1600s. Maude Medlock Christian's father, William Parks Medlock, was on the first grand jury in DeKalb County, Georgia. The Medlocks were a well-educated family. Maude was in the first class at Agnes Scott College, but was unable to finish because her father died leaving no will or income. Her uncle was the first of four generations in the family now to attend Emory University.

CARTER - Eden's maternal grandmother, Mary Sells Carter Christian, also came from very early settlers in North Alabama, in fact just across the county/state line from where the Beene family settled. Many of the family names are similar. Mary's mother was Lucy Sells, and included in her ancestry is a connection to the Sells Brothers, who were circus owners. They started as the Sells Brothers Circus, then bought the Floto circus out and were the Sells-Floto Circus. They owned the Buffalo Bill Show for a time, then were bought out by Ringling Brothers. The Carters also were well-educated, Lucy having attended college and her daughter, Mary, among the first women to attend (summer only) Emory University, where she met Eden's grandfather. She graduated from Brenau University.

We will post photos as soon as possible and welcome those from our family.

Nancy, I have a book, "Discovering Chandler Lines, 1475-1996, written by Annamae Barber Chandler. I will write the entire excerpt that she has on him for you, and Jim, and others who are interested:

Joel Chandler Harris writes "Uncle Remus Stories" in GA

Tabitha s. Chandler.(David5,Joell4,Robert3,Robert2,John1).Born, circa 1770, in Cumberland, VA. She was about 80 when she died, 1851, Eadenton, Putnam, GA. There has been much interest in the parentage of Joel Chandler Harris, the prolific author of an old favorite, The Uncle Remus Stories. Good sleuthing has found out. Tabitha married John Turman, circa 1788, in Mecklenberg/Charlotte, VA. He was born circa 1750, died after 1809, Richmond, GA. He was a merchant, planter, and Rev. War veteran. Tabitha and her family lived in extreme poverty--the children went to the poor school, clothes were handouts, even her burial was by the state--in contrast to her near relatives who were quite wealthy, living two blocks away for 20 years before Joel Chandler Harris' birth.

i. Ann Mary Turman

ii. Joel Chandler Turman. Born, circa 1792; died about 1836. He lived 1810-1816 in Richmond, GA, probably went to TN. He married Martha McCune, 1816, in Richmond, GA. She died in 1840. They had 2 sons, James, and George.

iii. John H. Turman. Born, circa 1794, died 1828, Augusta, GA, unmarried; a printer.

iv. Martin B. Turman. Born, circa 1796. Obtained a land lot in the 1820 lottery for Oglethorp, GA.

Ann Mary Turman.(Tabitha6, David5, Joell4, Robert3, Robert2, John1). Born circa 1790; she was about 73 when she died Feb. 1863, Eadenton, Putnam, GA.

She married, Michael Harris, about 1814. He was born circa 1780; died 1828 in TN or GA. The two yound people tried to make a living, but Michael was restless. After Mary Ann was born, in about 1818, they rode horseback to TN where Michael soon lost what little they had gambling. Ellen and Julie were born there. Mary ann and Ellen went to poor schools until 15. Michael died, or deserted her for another woman, or she left him, in 1828 in either TN, or GA. Ann returned to Eadenton where her mother, without resources, and his well-to-do sisters were. But they had to go on welfare; sometimes the neighbors brought them bacon, sugar, or firewood. Children:

i. Mary Ann Harris. Born 1816; she was 75 when she died, 1891, on her sister's plantation. She left poor school at 15, worked as a seamstress. She had one boy, Joel Chandler Harris, circa 1832, with red hair and freckles, whose father, a prominent citizen of Eadenton, she never revealed. He was named after Joel Chandler, a Rev. War veteran, after whom her uncle was named: Joel Chandler Turman. She brought him up herself, ostracized by the community and in extreme poverty. She took care of her mother until she died as well, then moved to her sister, Ellen's plantation during the Civil War. It was true that his playmates were the black children, heeard black's storie, and went to poor schools 1856-8. He had been fascinated with stories from a very young child and his mother read and discussed with him all kinds of books from the plantation library. In his teens, Mr. Turner, of Turnswold plantation who edited a newspaper took an interest in him, gave him a job as a printers helper, and advice on writing after he began sneaking his "Uncle Remus' Stories" into the columns.

ii. Ellen B. Harris. Born 1821, TN; she was 76 when she died, 1897, GA. She married, first, Augustin S.C. Johnson, 1840, but he died in 1842. She married second, c1845, William Taylor, and moved to his plantation in Randolfh, east AL. After their mother's death, Mary ann Harris, spent the rest of the Civil War on the Taylor plantation with her sister Ellen.

iii. Julie Harris. Born in TN; died about 10.

11 John Chandler (1600-London, England) Order of Descendants of Ancient Planters--John Chandler is believed to have been born about September 7, 1600. The Chandler Family Association publications say that John Chandler arrived on 6, June in 1610 at Jamestown, Virginia on the Hercules of Rye at the age of nine. The expedition of three ships led by Sir Thomas West, Lord Del Aware landed on Sunday morning June 10, 1610. We do not know of the circumstances of his family, if he was alone or with a mentor. The ships list of passengers lists him as a "single gentleman"

John lived adjacent to Albanio Lupo in Elizabeth City County, Virginia.

John survived the epidemics and Indian raids. He was single in 1623 when the list of the living was taken after the Indian massacre. In 1620, 1200 had been counted, but only 60 remained alive after the Indian attacks.

John was still single in 1624 he was living in Kiccoughtan, later Elizabeth City County, when he listed in a military unit run by Thomas Willoughby to whom he was indentured. He must have married not long after, for his son Robert was born about 1625-1630.

He married the widow of Albiano Lupo (who died in 1626) Elizabeth -?- Lupo, prior to 1636. This marriage brought ownership of 400 Acres of harbor front land into John's ownership where that land remained intact until the 5th generation when Hannah (Chandler) began selling off parcels in 1718.

In 1632 He was farming land that he owned or leased, and in 1636 he patented 1000 acres for himself and his "now wife Elizabeth," on Harris Creek in Elizabeth City, today within the city limits of Hampton, VA. He lived to be a prosperous planter, representing Elizabeth City in the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1645-1648. He was Justice of the county Court in 1646-1658, and may have died soon there after.

John Chandler's reference to his "now wife Elizabeth" would indicate a first wife who had died before 1636, and who was the mother of Robert Chandler of York County.

From the Chandler Family Associations Newsletter Volume III, Number III, P.O. Box 8132, Lakeland, FL 33802-8132. February 1994.

*He arrive in Jamestown in 1610 on the ship Hercules.

*He is listed in the Muster of 1624/1625 as a single man age 24.

*He acquired land in Elizabeth City co., VA and lived until his death on a large tract of land that bordered in Warwick Co.

*His marriage to Elizabeth Lupo, widow, was apparently his second Marriage.

It should be noted that there were other Chandlers who were immigrants to America at later dates. They are not related in this country to the 1610 John Chandler of Jamestown, although it is possible that there may have been a connection before coming to this country.

John Chandler b. ca. 1600, d. ca.1660, arrived in Jamestown Virginia in 1610. John Chandler was the first of the Chandlers to come to America as a permanent resident..

John2 Chandler (John1) was born St Margaret's, westminster, England 7 September 1600. John died 1660 Elizabeth City co., Virginia, at 59 years of age.

He married Elizabeth Lupo Elizabeth City co., Virginia, 1627. Elizabeth was born in England. Elizabeth became the mother of Richard Chandler 1624. Elizabeth became the mother of Robert Chandler Elizabeth City co., Virginia, 1628. Elizabeth became the mother of John Chandler Elizabeth City co., Virginia, 1637.

At 23 years of age John became the father of Richard Chandler 1624. At 27 years of age John became the father of Robert Chandler Elizabeth City co., Virginia, 1628. At 36 years of age John became the father of John Chandler Elizabeth City co., Virginia, 1637. John migrated to Jamestown Colony aboard the ship Hercules in 1610 from Lansbury, England

=============================== In last msg I neglected to say that there was an Abraham Chandler in the 1820 census of Gwinnett County. Both adults ages given as 26-45, and there were 3 girls and one boy, all in the 0-10 age range. They were not in later censuses of Gwinnett. Also, there was an original mbr. of Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church named Mary Chandler, on 21 June 1823. Church is just across county line in Walton County. Also, a W. Chandler as orig. mbr.

Mr. Rogers, I have very limited information on Augustus Peter Burr. In 1854 he was assistant editor of "The American Union" newspaper in Griffin, GA, and some time later purchased the newspaper from A. G. Murray and still later sold it back to Mr. Murray. Quimby Melton, Jr., in his "History of Griffin, Ga., 1840-1940" (Griffin, GA: Hometown Press, 1996), states on page 53 that around 1856 A. P. Burr was owner and editor of the "Independent South" newspaper in Griffin, and continued until he enlisted for Confederate servcie (Co. B, 5th GA Regt.), in 1861. He died 29 October 1865 in Macon, GA, and was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Griffin. The same book, page 57, lists A. P. Burr as one of the trustees of the Griffin Methodist Female College in 1859.

Jason Burr, native of Connecticut, is also referenced in Mr. Melton's book. Jason Burr was living in Griffin by 1843. He was one of the original justices of the Spalding County Inferior Court on the county's creation in 1851, and was an original trustee of Marshall College (male) in Griffin in 1853. He, too, is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Griffin. The 1860 Spalding County, GA, census, lists Jason Burr as age 59, born in Connecticut, wife Nancy J. Burr, age 50, born in GA, and children, all born in GA: Sarah J. Burr, 26; Henry C. Burr, 18; Theodocia Burr, 14; Chancey S. Burr, 12; and several other persons who were employed or otherwise associated with Jason Burr in his business as a tinner (which I take to mean that he was a tin manufacturer or produced finished goods of tin).

A. P. Burr appears in the 1860 Spalding County census as age 40, born in New Brunswick, by profession an editor (newspaper), with wife Catherine C. Burr, age 35, born in GA, and children, all born in GA: Seneca B. Burr (male), 18; Frank S. Burr, 16; Ethene F. Burr, 13; Helen Burr, 10; Jason Burr, 8; Sarah Burr, 6; Sophronia Burr, 4; Willie Burr, 2. (For this census data, reference Geraldine Purdy, ed., "1860 Federal Census, Spalding County, Georgia" [Griffin, GA: Griffin Historical and Preservation Society, 1985], pages not numbered.)

It has always amused me that Margaret Mitchell in "Gone With the Wind" (New York: Macmillan Publishing Co., Inc., 1936), p.325 and perhaps elsewhere, referred to the Burrs of Macon as cousins of her fictional Hamilton family. Perhaps Miss Mitchell associated the two names through some less congenial Hamilton-Burr history (the famous duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr), but too, since Miss Mitchell was a newspaper writer and a great friend of Susan Myrick who wrote for the "Macon Telegraph," it is possible that Miss Mitchell had some awareness of the newspaper man Augustus Peter Burr and his however-brief connection to Macon.

I am not a member of the Burr family, but am collecting information for a cousin who descends from Augustus Peter Burr's daughter Sophronia Burr Milligan, through her daughter Theodosia Kreese (Milligan) Strickland (Mrs. Clarence Burke Srickland) of Concord, Pike County, GA. I take it that A. P. Burr was perhaps a younger brother of Jason Burr? (I thought I had their dates from cemetery monuments in Griffin, but cannot now locate them.) Could you please post, or e-mail me, the maiden name of A. P. Burr's wife and this Burr lineage, as I do not know which of the Burr brother immigrants to Connecticut this line descends from. Thank you.
