| In the kitchen of Jean's home. Notice that there is only one tap at the sink, an indication that the home had no hot water. To the left and out of the picture, was a coal burning stove used mostly for heat in colder weather. The propane gas stove was used for all the cooking. Hot water for bathing was generally obtained by heating it in a large copper vat on top the coal stove. A zinc coated tub was placed on the kitchen floor for bathing. The coffee pot was an ever present feature of the kitchen. Coffee was always available all day long. What looks like gunk streaming from the oven of the gas stove are really stains that resisted all removal attempts. |
