Tony and Shawn hit the road for the North Spit of Coos Bay to check out the wreckage of the George L. Olson. You have to have a 4wd vehicle (equipped with an off-road flag) to get there, unless you want to hike in about 4-5 miles from the main road. The beach access road will actually take you right by the New Carissa, a wood chip freighter that ran aground during a storm in February of '99.

Just looking at this thing makes me want to get a tetanus shot.

And here it is... the George L. Olson, a 223 foot wood-hull schooner that was launched in Oakland, CA, in 1917, and ran aground in Coos Bay in 1944. It was powered by a 1000 hp engine and served as a lumber carrier. Bet you weren't expecting the history lesson.

Here are the answers to the questions that are running through your head right now; (A) Yes, he's sniffing it, (B) Yes, it smells funny, and (C) It's Tony, that's why.

The BLM Ranger we spoke with told us that only street-legal class II vehicles (no ATVs) are allowed on the beach around the ship. So... why not a few trophy shots. Tony's TJ is looking pretty burly these days.

And the X...
