Looking from Plugge's Plateau over North Beach (now called Ocean Beach). The mown area is the site of the Anzac Day Dawn Service. This is the view that the few Turkish troops posted here would have had of the landings. This is until the New Zealander Arthur Plugge, one of the battalian commanders of the NZ Infantry Brigade, succeeded in taking the ridge on 25 April 1915. |

Canakkale, like much of Turkey, is steeped in history: Famous visitors and conquerors passed by or resided here; The famous cities of antiquity, Troy and Assos are located here and some of the world's famous battles took place. Greeks, Persians, Phrygians, Celts and Romans all lived in the region. Jason and the Argonauts passed by, as did Alexander the Great. Then the Seljuck Turks and the Ottomans. The battles of the First World War were but the more recent of many.
Troy is a twenty minute drive from Canakkale and Assos, where Aristotle spent several years, is another hour further south down the Aegean coast. |

Looking South South West from Azmak Cemetery, in the Suvla Bay area, towards Chunuk Bair (Centre of range in the distance and Lone Pine, centre right of same range. The ridge in the middle background, Chocolate Hills, saw very heavy fighting in the August Offensive (note the road climbing the ridge). |

Crossing the Dardanelles from Eceabat to Canakkale. In addition to semi trailers, buses and cars, there was a cart load of pumpkins. The horse seemed to have done this trip before! December 2004 |
