THE PK TROPHY
In April of 2000, a friend and I were discussing the possibility that the team would finish the season with an NHL record for Penalty Killing. It was discussed that they deserved MORE than just a place in an NHL record book after a long and hard fought season of injuries and adversaties.
We decided it would be great if the fans got together and purchased a trophy for them. The word was put out via the internet Stars Message boards and the response was phenominal. The result, a Penalty Kill trophy which is pictured to the right and donations to the Stars Foundation totally nearly $600 all from the fans and all a labor of love. There were 32 contributors and they came from all over the United States.
After contacting Stars President Jim Lites, it was decided that the trophy would be delivered to him and it would be displayed along with the mock up Presidents trophy in the Stars trophy case at the Ballpark in Arlington, Stars Headquarters. A photo and note would also be sent to the players to let them know exactly how much the fans thought of them.
A presentation had been discussed for the early part of the season but it was decided by the coaching staff that the team needed to focus on the future and while it was a greatly appreciated effort on behalf of the fans to a team they so love, the 2000/2001 team had to move forward and look to the future and upcoming season through the envisioned eyes of Head Coach Ken Hitchcock, and the fabulous coaching staff of the Dallas Stars. With the new additions to the team and the consistant play of the veteran players, this season looks to be a wonderful mix of new meets experienced and it is our hope that the Stars will come out on top of the mix.
To the contributors, I say thank you. Your generosity and support has been greatly appreciated.
To the Penalty Kill Unit I say WOOO HOOO! You guys ROCK!!!!!!
To Mr. Lites I say, thank you for being so helpful and supportive of an organized fan effort to appreciate their team. I thank you for the time and courtesies you have afforded me.
You are the best!!!! GO STARS!!!!!!!!!
