23 Carlo Cudicini (Italian)
Highly regarded shot-stopper who took the place of De Goey in Ranieris first season and apart from losing his place through injury has never really looke back. Rated as one of the best in the premiership he is key in Chelseas rear-gard.Good reactions.
31 Mark Bosnich (Australian)
After a short unhappy stay at Manchester United, the Aussie joined Chelsea to restart his career but after waiting to make his impact he lost his place to Cudicini through injury after playing well and has never regained his place. Solid keeper.
2 Albert Ferrer (Spanish)
A �2.5 million buy from Barcelona the season the club finished 3rd the little full back was a consistant performer and was regarded as one of the best right backs in the Premiership. Never really recovered having lost his place in the 2000 FA Cup final through injury and has had to play second fiddle since, when fit.
3 Celestine Babayaro (Nigerian)
Brought to the club as an 18 year old, the left back come left midfielder is especially famous for his acrobatic back-flip celebrations and is a consistant perfomer. Prone to the ocassional mistake. Skillfull but doesnt get forward enough.
6 Marcel Desailly (French)
The rock. Legend at centre-back. Chelsea and France captain, good in the air, tough-tackling and is regarded as one of the best defenders in the game having led Milan to the Champions League in the the early nineties. Still masterfull and leads the team well.
7 Winston Bogarde (Dutch)
Outcast who has never been given a chance, rarely seen left/centre back.
13 William Gallas (French)
Can play anywhere along back four but at centre back is regarded as one for the future with real pace and is a big part of the Chelsea defence. Good in the air, lightning quick.
14 Graeme Le Saux (English)
As Left back/midfielder he is one of the best crossers in the game but has been dogged by injury and has mised out on more caps because of a reputation for being hotheaded. Small but quality.
15 Mario Melchiot (Dutch)
Solid Right back, skillfull but lacks in positioning, not great crossing but is a good performer and is good in the air.
