Enzo Ferrari was in Modena on February 18, 1898and died on August 14 1998. In 1929 he founded Scuderia Ferrari with the purpose of helping members compete in motor racing. Racing activities, with Alfa Romeo cars continued until 1938, the year in which he became Racing Manager for Alfa Corse. After two years, Enzo Ferrari spilt with Alfa Romeo and founded Auto Avio Construzione Ferrari, to manufacture machine tools, particularly oledynamic grinding machines. In spite of a promise of non - competition, the company began to study and design an 8 cylinder 1500cc car known as the 815, two of which were built to take part in the 1940 Mille Miiglia. In 1943 the workshops moved from Modena to Maranello. The outbreak of World War put an end to motor racing activities. At the end of the war the company changed its name to Ferrari and designed the 125 sport, a 12 cylinder 1500cc car which Franco Cortesedrove in the Piancenza circuit on May 11 1947 and two weeks later won the Rome Grand Prix. |
Since then Ferrari have won more than 5000 races world wide in a variety of categories. The most important being 12 Formula One Drivers Championships, 9 wins at Le Mans, 15 Formula One Constructors World Titles and over 140 Formula One Grand Prix victories. In 1969, Enzo Ferrari sold 50 % of the share capital to the Fiat Group, and investment that increased to 90% in 1988. The manufacturing plants are located in Modena (body work only) and manufacturing at Maranello Today the company employ about 2000 people, with and output of 3 600 cars per year, in three models, 360 Modena, 456M GT, and the GTA 550. Ferrari has direct sales branches in the USA Germany and Switzerland. The marketing network includes of 300 sales and service points in 43 countries. |
