| BACKGROUND Ed Coburn has worked in the specialized information/publishing field since 1982, with increasing responsibilities. He has worked in large and small organizations, consumer and business-to-business. Mr. Coburn is Publishing Director at Harvard Health Publications, the consumer health publishing division of the Harvard Medical School. Harvard Health Publications (HHP) publishes a wide range of authoritative health information, in a variety of formats. HHP's newsletters, books, reports, syndicated columns, websites and other publishing activities reach millions of people each month, and millions more around the world through its licensing efforts. Harvard Health Publications' revenues exceed $22 million annually. Mr. Coburn manages the internal operations of the group, which includes 25 internal staff and many clinically based doctor/faculty members. He also develops and maintains business partnerships with a number of premier organizations, including McGraw-Hill, Simon & Schuster, Staywell, Intelihealth.com (a subsidiary of Aetna), United Media, Newsweek, Time magazine, United Media and others. At Harvard health Publications, Mr. Coburn planned and lead a project to develop a unified content management system for use as an internal editorial resource as well as in conjunction with the public website for paid customer access to archival content. Other notable accomplishments include establishing a central production capability with a strictly adhered to production schedule, development of a public relations program, and outreach to other organizations throughout Harvard University to identify and exploit opportunities. In addition to his management duties at Harvard Medical School, Mr. Coburn leads management training classes on dealing with difficult people, coaching for improved performance, retention, and managing effective teams. He is also an active member of the Harvard Medical School Joint Council (union-management relations committee).. In the spring of 2003, Mr. Coburn co-chaired the consumer publishing track of the International Newsletter & Specialized Information Conference of the Specialized Information Publishers Association. Mr. Coburn was profiled in a cover story in the August, 2002 issue of Target Marketing magazine (see link to profile at top of page) and a case study from the Mequoda Group.. Prior to moving to Harvard in the spring of 2001, Mr. Coburn was Managing Director and Publisher of Circadian Information which he founded in May, 1995 with Dr. Martin Moore-Ede, professor of physiology at Harvard Medical School and president of Circadian Technologies, Inc., a research and consulting firm. Circadian Information publishes on the topic of health and safety for shiftworkers and managers in 24/7 operations. Mr. Coburn had full P&L responsibility and managed all strategic and operational issues of the company; marketing, product development, editorial, website/online services, customer service, production and fulfillment. Mr. Coburn's PR efforts on behalf of Circadian Information resulted in coverage in the Wall St. Journal, New York Times, Boston Globe, Time Magazine, USA Today, CNNfn, Fast Company and numerous other newspapers, radio and TV news shows (on CBS, ABC, NBC, PBS and CNN), and trade publications. Mr. Coburn received his MBA, with honors, from the Babson College Graduate School of Management (Wellesley, Mass.). Babson's program is widely recognized for its strength in entrepreneurial studies, most recently being cited by a major business magazine as offering the best entrepreneurial studies program in the country. Mr. Coburn has distinguished himself in the newsletter industry through his activity in the specialized Information Publishers Association (SIPA). He currently serves on the board of directors for SIPA. He has spoken at industry conferences on numerous topics including Newsletter Audits, Launching a Newsletter Without Direct Mail or Telemarketing, Subscriber Surveys, Advertising-based Directory Publishing, Marketing On-Line, Developing Ancillary Products, and Improving Marketer/Editor Synergy. He also created and was the sole presenter for a full-day, add-on seminar on integrated marketing at the International Newsletter Marketing Conference and a full-day seminar on Getting Started Online. In addition, he has been a contributor to the Specialized Information Publishers Association newsletter, Hotline, and he has been cited in publishing industry publications including What's Working in Direct Mail, the Newsletter on Newsletters, and Marketing with Technology. Mr. Coburn began his career in the Newsletter Center of Cahners Publishing Company (Newton, Mass.). In 1986 part of the Cahners Newsletter Center, including Mr. Coburn, spun off to begin Cutter Information Corp. (Arlington, Mass.), a business-to-business publisher. As a member of the Executive Committee, Mr. Coburn was involved in most operational aspects of the company Mr. Coburn served as Group Publisher for the Software Technologies and Oil Spill Information Services groups, which accounted for $2.5+ million of revenues. http://www.geocities.com/EdCoburn/background.html |
