Come on phone, ring! Ring, damn it, RING! "Are you all right?" I looked up to see my father poke his head in around the door frame. I stopped pacing and smiled at him. "Yeah, just waiting for Deke to call." "Well, don't wait too long. Good night." "Night." Deke I'm gonna hurt you, I promised in my head. I twisted and untwisted my fingers, silently willing the phone to ring. Earlier in the evening, after I had gotten home, I got and awful feeling that something was wrong as I was doing my homework. I went to phone Deke but remembered he was over Crystal's and he'd call at ten. It was now 10:30 and I was just about out of my mind. A few more threats to the phone and I gave up. "it's nothing anyway," I mumbled crawling into bed, "he'll call tomorrow....and I'll chew him out."
"Waaaaake up! It's 8:30 a.m. here on..." Click! I hit the buzzer on the radio and rubbed the sleep out of my eyes. I had done it again; set my alarm on a Saturday. Yelling at myself mentally, I noticed the note on my radioand picked it up, reading while turning on my T.V. "Gone shopping, before the traffic. In desperate need of milk. Your brother is at Shawn's. Be home soon. Mom & Dad" I reread it then turned my attention to the T.V where the news broadcaster was reporting something about an accident. So early? A picture of a car popped up behind her head. A black convertible. With two solid red stripes down the middle. Fear slowly crept into my chest and I tried to push it down as I fumbled to turn up the volume so I could hear. "...for those just joining. A car has been found on the side of Sterling Street containing two bodies. According to authorities, the car overturned late last night around 10:00, due to slick roads from earlier rain. Both occupants were wearing seat belts. No names have been released at this time, but it is known and confirmed from police that both bodies were male, approximately 17 years of age and neither have survived. Now onto..." "No," I whispered, clutching the remote, "it can't be, no..." The phone began to ring downstairs and I slowly got up off my bed and stumbled downstairs. I reached the landing and hurried to it so it would stop ringing, it sounded more like screaming in my ears. In the kitchen I yanked it off the receiver and brought it to my ear. "He-hello?" I whispered. "Amara?" Sobbing. "It's Crystal. Have you seen the news yet? Shit. He's gone Amara, both of them are gone. THEY NEVER MADE IT HERE!" NO! I screamed in my head. "It's not real!" Dropping the phone I sank to the floor in a sobbing heap, rocking back and forth and crying so hard my entire body shook from it all. A knock came at the door and I stood to answer it. I opened it up to the face of Alex. I gulped. He looked tired and his eyes wre red from what looked like crying. I never knew they wre friends. "I'm sorry." He choked out. Breathing in deep, trying to hold it all in, I collapsed again at his feet crying over the loss of my best friend. A tear escaped and made its way down his cheek as he walked in closing the door behind him. He knelt down beside me on the floor and held me as I cried and screamed in anger and sadness.
He held me as we both cried. |
