Ed was first made famous as a member of The Ames Brothers (originally The Amory Brothers) quartet. When he left the group in 1961 he studied acting at the Herbert Berghof School, and later studied with Tamara Doykharhanova, Lee Strasberg, and Milton Katselas. It was his performance in the "Daniel Boone" series that launched his solo singing career.
