| COURSE FORMAT AND GRADING POLICY FOR NEW TECHNICAL VENTURES COURSE FORMAT Class meets Tuesdays from 4:30 to 7:15 at the Dorsey campus of the Johns Hopkins PTE Programs from September 11, 2001 until December 11, 2001. Class will not meet November 20 and instead an exam will be taken via the Internet. For the first 10 classes, a lecture will be held form 4:30-5:45 and during the period of 6:00-7:15 there will be either a business plan practical or else a case study in alternate weeks. These require extensive participation by the students. During the last three classes, students will work on the business plan project, listen to seminar topics and make their final presentation. All homework, projects, exams, critiques and peer evaluation forms or any other class work MUST be submitted in MS Word format via email. No paper will be accepted for any reason. All students must send an email to the instructor before the second week of class to insure receipt of all course email announcements, assignment supplements, Powerpoint charts, midterm exam and graded assignments. Send your email address to Ed Addison. COURSE REQUIREMENTS 1. The course requires extensive reading from the course reference materials and the Internet. The assignments assume you have completed the reading and the exam will cover the content of the reading. You should plan to keep up each week with the assigned reading in the syllabus. 2. There will be 5 "case studies" of new ventures. For each, you must submit a report in MS Word format via email by the required due date. Instructions for each assignment are given under the link on the course homepage to that assignment. The due dates are given in the syllabus. Late homework will be penalized 20% per day late. 3. There will be one exam given on the 11th class period as indicated in the syllabus. You will not be required to come to class for this exam. The exam will be emailed to you at 4:30pm on the scheduled exam date and you must return it via email by 6:30PM the same day. It is an open book exam and will consist of 50 multiple choice questions primarily on the course readings, but also on the course lectures and class discussions. 4. The major requirement for the course is a business plan project. The details are described under the link on the course home page. This may be done individually or in small groups. It is due on the last day of class along with a 15 minute presentation. The business plan must be on a real or planned technology venture. The business plan must be submitted electronically in MW Word and MS Powerpoint format. 5. You will be given ten chapters to read from the Instructor's forthcoming book Leveraging the Horizon. You are being asked to write a short critique of each chapter according to the standards given under the link on the course home page called "Critiques". These assignments are optional and will provide "extra credit" if completed to required standards. The readings are included on material to be tested on the exam.
