March 2002: EGR and fan modifications:

CLICKEZ!CLICKEZ!Having the EGR without the intake heating is uneasy because the Qjet intake design combines them. After long brain farts, I make a special passage with a tube for the EGR and plug the exhaust passage under the Qjet intake.

CLICKEZ!CLICKEZ!CLICKEZ!I use some cement to file up the heating passage. The intake is kept at 45degrees during the filling.

CLICKEZ!CLICKEZ!CLICKEZ!One week later, the cement is very hard and plugs definitively the exhaust passage under the Qjet. I drill the plug-plate at 45 deg to fit the tube. This tube allows the exhaust gas to reach the EGR valve.

CLICKEZ!CLICKEZ!I can now put the intake manifold.

The intake manifold must be torqued with a torque wrench, but the inner nuts are not easy to torque.

CLICKEZ!CLICKEZ!CLICKEZ!I take half of an old universal joint for ratchet wrenches. With that, it is possible to torque anything with any kind of wrench.

CLICKEZ!CLICKEZ!CLICKEZ!As the engine is not in yet, let's clean up the engine compartment with some diesel fuel.
I replace all the wire protections. They are falling in bits.

CLICKEZ!CLICKEZ!CLICKEZ!I dismount the radiator and its shrouds.

I put these plugs on the oil lines coming from the tranny.

CLICKEZ!CLICKEZ!CLICKEZ!The radiator appears to be completely clogged by bugs and dirts. I'm sorry to let go this souvenir from California using compressed air.
I spend 2 hours to reshape the bended cooling fins using a Tyrap.

CLICKEZ!CLICKEZ!I planned to replace the stock fan with a electric fan.
The biggest electric fans available in the junk yard were only 11",  so I choose to put two fans coming out a Renault model 19.
A try on the radiator gives an idea of the fans project.

CLICKEZ!CLICKEZ!Some modifications on the electric fans.

I cut one side on the support on each fan. I can put one fan out of line with the other.
This is supposed to optimize the cooling of each fan on the top and bottom of the radiator.

CLICKEZ!CLICKEZ!CLICKEZ!Something has to be made to switch on and off those electric fans, like this thermostat location welded on the radiator.
A touch of black paint gives it a "like new" look. The radiator with the two electric fans is now ready.
