The Corporation ECOTONO was constituted in the year 2000 by biology professionals. It is a non profit organisation whose main interest is the study and conservation of the wild life, always searching for the man's harmonic integration with its environment.

We think that the appropriate and sustainable management of the resources and tropical ecosystems should be based on the deep understanding of their biodiversity and their functioning.

The aggressive destruction and wide diffusion of inadequate practices of management in these ecosystems, make of initiatives like ours a high-priority task in order to increase the quality of life of human populations and to satisfy the expectations of the new generations.

In consequence the corporation has as fundamental objectives:

  • Design and execute scientific, technological and cultural activities, around the biology, ecology and conservation of the fauna and flora.

  • Design and execute management plans, recovery and sustainable use of natural resources.

  • Offer informal training and education in anyone of its ways.
  • Enhance the channels of communication of all this environmental themes.

  • To implement social studies that involve the environmental dimension in cultural and social processes.

Since the moment of its conformation ECOTONO has been working in diverse projects that involve many of the objectives mentioned before. Some of the most important ones, carried out actually by our work team in collaboration with other entities are:

This idea was designed together with: The foundation Los Colibríes de Altaquer (FELCA), The Group of Ornithology of the National University of Colombia (GOUN), The Group of Friends of Birds of the University of Nariño (GAICA). The initiative is cofinanced by the Fund for the Environmental Action (FPAA) and the scenario for its execution is the Natural Reserve of Ñambí River to 1500 m of altitude in the Pacific slope of Nariño (Biogeographical Chocó, Colombia). This project has components of conservation, education, scientific investigation and divulgation. An activity to stand out in the development of this proposal is the production of an illustrated field guide of the hummingbird community of the River Ñambí region, the most diverse in the planet.

Ecological Monitoring of the bird community and their interaction with the vegetation in the High Andean Mountain Forest of Torca (Eastern Mountains of Bogotá).

In agreement with the Group of Ornithology of the National University of Colombia (GOUN) and the support of the Unit of Ornithology of the Institute of Natural Sciences (ICN-MHN) we have been working in this project for more than one year. We are studying the ecology of a diverse community of birds in the most extensive and conserved patch of high Andean Forest surrounding the Sabana de Bogotá. Some of our partial results have been published in the XIV National Encounter of Ornithology in Leticia - Amazonas 2001, in the II National - VIII Latin American Congress of Botany Cartagena 2002, in a documental television note transmitted by Señal Colombia and in several conferences carried out in the National University. acional.

Mechanisms of Coexistence in a Diverse Community of Manakins (Aves: Pipridae) in the Low Valley of the River Javari (Brazilian Amazonia).

Our corporation is cofinancing in association with the Natural Reserve Palmari this interesting investigation which studies the most diverse community of manakins, very important in the seed dispersion of the humid lowland forests. With this initiative we start process of understanding the biological interactions that take place in the northern Amazonian region, with the objective to establish lights on the sustainable management and conservation of its natural resources. .

Fundacao para a Conservacao do Vale Baixo do Rio Javari.

Actually our Corporation negotiates the constitution of this international entity with the objective of establishing conservation areas and management plans in the low basin of the River Javari (important tributary of the Amazon River ) in the Brazilian Amazonia. At the moment we are working with investigators and conservationists of the United Kingdom, the local communities of Palmari and Aldea, and Natural Reserve Palmari.
