Lab. of Toban Northeast Project

Lab of Toban Northeast Project was established in the Faculty of Economics, Chulalongkorn University in March 1980. By support of JICA, Japan, the lab first accommodated the joint study project for integrated small-scale rural development in Northeast Thailand between Chulalongkorn University and Kyoto University of Japan during 1980 - 1987. This project brought about a lot of rural changes in Northeast Thailand, especially in Thung Kula Ronghai area. We have first set up three experimental villages in Khonkaen, Roi-Et and Maha Sarakham provinces to demonstrate the Model of Integrated Small-Scale Rural Development in Northeast Thailand. All three sites are fully equipped with research stations, which are used by researchers and students from all faculties until today.

From 1987, the Lab had furthered its rural development research in Northeast Thailand, emphasising more in the social and economic aspects by the support of the Government's Green Northeast Project and private foundations. Four more experimental villages have been established in Roi-ET and Buriram provinces. Many rural projects were implemented in experimental villages; such as, floating nursery project, school lunch projects by pond management, village Cooperatives, fertility improvement on land embankments, etc. Also in cooperation with Chulalongkorn University, the Lab has implemented a multi-disciplinary course in rural development using experimental villages as study areas.
