The Go For Glass campaign started as a reaction to the proposed introduction of plastic bottles for mineral drinks. In the early 90's the lobby was successful as far as this was concerned although at the moment various bottling companies are lobbying to introduce plastic bottles. One bottler seems to be producing soft drinks in plastic bottles illegally by stating they are energy drinks. Unfortunately water is still produced in plastic bottles and as from this year (1997) milk is only being sold in tetra packs whereas until a few months ago the glass bottle option was available. |

ECO believes that if glass bottles are replaced by cans and plastic bottles, this would result in an additional 13 million units of waste per year. As a consequence Malta would need more land fill space which is not only an eyesore but also very economically expensive for the country. Considering that 90% of glass bottles purchased currently are returned to shops after use, and that they can be used between 30 and 40 times, besides recycling, such a move is illogical. Therefore ECO suggests that the Polluter Pays Principle be introduced on unecological packing. |

Such a principle will make unecological products (plastic, cans etc) unattractive because they would consequently be more expensive. Furthermore, the money collected could be used to landscape the landfills which scar the Maltese Islands. |
