Grading Procedure:
Grade Break Down Grading Curve
Participation 5% A = 90% - 100%
Assignments 15% B = 80% - 89%
Quizzes 20% C = 70% - 79%
Lab Reports 25% D = 60% - 69%
Tests 35% F = 0% - 59%
100% = Quarter Grade
Semester
Grade
1st Quarter Grade 42.5%
2nd Quarter Grade 42.5%
Final
Exam 15%
100% = Semester Grade
Participation: At the start of each quarter, each student will receive a participation grade worth 5% of their grade. The only way that these points are lost is through poor behavior (2 points), tardiness (1 point), and unexcused absences (2 points) out of a maximum of 20 points. The rest of the participation grade is based on whiteboard discussions. Students will earn points here by asking questions during the discussions. These points range from 5 to 15 points depending on the number of discussion sessions per quarter.
Assignments: Assignments are given periodically and are only eligible for full credit when turned in on the day they are due. Assignments that are turned in late can only receive a maximum of half credit. In the case of an absence the student will be given 2 days to make up the assignment for each day they were absent. Students with unexcused absences will receive an “F”on all assignments turned in or completed on that day.
Lab Reports: Lab reports will typically be due 1 to 3 days following the completion of the lab activity (instructor will notify you of the due date). The format for writing up lab reports will be given out prior to the first formal lab. Guidelines for turning in lab reports are the same as those for assignments.
Quizzes: Quizzes will be given approximately every 1 to 2 weeks. Students that miss a quiz due to an absence will have the option of having their next quiz count twice to make up for the missed quiz. The lowest quiz will be thrown out for each grading period.
Tests and Exams: Tests will be given approximately every 2 to 4 weeks. A final exam will be given at the end of each semester and count 15% toward your semester grade. It is expected and suggested that students absent on a test day will make the test up on the day that student returns to school. Students missing consecutive days will have one week from the day they return to make up the test they missed. Special cases will be considered.
Comments:
- Cheating
Students are expected to do their own work. Any student caught cheating will receive a zero on all work for that day and will be dealt with through the school cheating policy. However, students are encouraged to use each other as references when working on lab reports and assignments as long as they do their “own work”.
- Excessive tardies
Any student that exceeds two tardies in a given quarter will be assigned a lunch detention on their third tardy. Any subsequent tardies will result in the assigning of additional lunch detentions.
- Calculators
Students are not to use graphing calculators for game playing. Students using their calculators in this way will lose all participation points for the day. On the second offense the calculator will be confiscated and returned at the end of the hour and participation points lost. The third offense will result in confiscation and clearing of the calculators memory along with lost participation points.
- Review Sessions
On the day before and the day of exams I like to hold review sessions for students to ask questions and clarify any concepts that may have been difficult for them to grasp. These sessions are usually from 3:00 - 4:00 on days before exams and 7:00 - 7:35 on the day of exams.
- Food and Drink
In accordance with school policy and due to the fact that a number of computers are in our classroom, no food or drink is allowed in the classroom at anytime! The only exception is water in a seal able container.
- Science Mini-Lab
We are fortunate to have 8 on-line computers that act as one of three science mini labs. Due to this fact it is important that you ask me permission before you use any of the computers. Your request will be granted as long as all of your work is completed for this class and that you are using the computer for school related work. No casual surfing, non-school related e-mail, or instant messages.
If you are granted permission to use a computer before class starts (during the passing period) you must log out at the sound of the bell and take your seat. Permission to use the computers will never be granted during announcements. Violation of these rules will result in a loss of computer privileges.
- Extra
Help
I will be available to give extra help from 7:15 to 7:42 each morning and from 3:00 to 4:00(when the varsity football season is over and before the start of track season) after school. I am also available during 6th and 7th periods. You do not need to make an appointment, but to make sure that I will be available, see me in advance.
