Censorship in Music, music is a very effective form of expression. Censoring music does not work. When they mute the words in songs, they are not fooling anyone, they child hears the break in the lyrics and thinks about the word more than if they had simply left the word. Also, I believe that profanity is not used solely to offend the intended audience; I believe it is used to emphasize a point or regain the listeners attention. Profanity also can be used to express emotion or extremes. These can be very helpful tools when relating feelings or ideals to an audience. Censoring things do not stop kids from hearing them it often encourages kids to buy a cd, because now not only are they getting a good cd but, they are also rebelling against parents and accepted practices. Parents should avoid contact with this kind of music when kids are young so it is apparent to kids that it is offensive to some, and makes one appear to have a poor vocabulary. However, parents should remember that by the time their kids want to listen to music containing profanity, in our society they have obviously been exposed to it before, so the words are already in their innocent little heads.
In America, censorship has always been an issue. People have protested, fought and debated over the topic since the founding of the nation. America, no matter what any one says was founded on the belief that every one is equal and entitled to their own opinions and points of view. Arguments stating that these freedoms were implemented to keep the government in check or insure liberty and not to protect nazi/hate group publications are misleading. While, I do not agree with their beliefs, I do believe that as Americans they have the right to think and say what they want. As long as they do not act upon them and infringe upon the rights of others, I say we have nothing to fear. If society takes it upon themselves to decrease violence in the media, or educate children on right and wrong like society should be doing anyways then we will not have to worry about children performing hate crimes and acts of violence. More or less, society (parents, teachers, schools, media, etc.) should be battling the words not hiding them until a children stumble upon them and do not know how to handle them. Parents have to start when kids are young, they cannot leave it alone until society has already molded their incredibly impressionable minds. This has to be done before jr. high because after that parental influence becomes less and less effective. If you are really worried about what your kids see and hear than instill in them a firm sense of right and wrong, if you do then you should have nothing to worry about.
