Welcome to the Shining Force Gaiden Character Guide. Be warned that
this page is chock full of spoilers, including game screens, and thus,
unless you have played this game already, leave this
page immediately!. Unless you know for sure that you will never
play this game. Ever. Otherwise more than half of the fun that awaits
you will never materialize. Ever.
Okay, on we go!
Shining Force Gaiden features the return of a few Shining Force I
characters, as well as a couple of characters descended from heroes
of that game. Unfortunately, it seems that mainly the only characters
to make reappearances in this game are the original, personality-less
characters who followed Max at the beginning of Shining Force I...
personally, I liked Gort better than Luke, Mae better than Ken, and
Diane better than Hans. Hans especially reeked... Gong was a good
one, though...

Anri
Anri seems to have aged rather well since her days of Shining Force I,
where she wasn't very pretty at all, even while wearing her 'kitui huku.'
Now, years older and queen of Guardiana, she has become quite comely,
and her hair has turned purple (from white) to boot! Hmm, it's usually
the other way, but...
|
 |
Ken
Ken seems to have aged rather poorly since his days of Shining Force I.
Why bring back Ken?! There are many much cooler characters from the first
game compared to Ken. Like Pelle! Or Kokichi! Or anybody! Just not Ken...

 |
Rou (Lowe)
That wimpy healer Rou from Shining Force I has returned as your
advisor. Still chubby as ever, he at some point apparently grew
a moustache. But what are you doing as an advisor, Rou? Use your
healing powers to help us out in battle! ...but I guess he does use
his powers when resurrecting and curing characters afterwards.

 |
Ruusu
What kind of a name is Ruusu? Anyway, Ruusu is the only son of
Ragu (Luke) from the first Shining Force game. In fact, he looks almost
exactly like him... a bit fatter, though. At least he doesn't have that
ugly clown nose that Ragu did...
|
 |
Shade
The only son of Hans, from Shining Force I. Apparently, he came to
Queen Anri's resque at the command of his father. Shade looks nothing
like his wimpy father, and has a very adventurous look in his eye.
He's probably a bad kid who doesn't listen to his dad very much.
|
 |
Shigu
Shigu is Gong's nephew (Gong was the monk in Shining Force I).
Gong had a cool, strong-looking face... why does Shigu look so dumb?
From the back, he looks the same, though. As a mastermonk, Shigu doesn't
seem to have the power to throw energy as his uncle could...
Compared to Clay, Gong is quite weak, and seems to only do 1 HP of damage
to monsters in the later half of the game.
|
 |
Wendy
Wendy is the youngest sister of Tao, the fire mage of Shining Force I.
Tao was quite ugly, even with her 'sugoi mizugi.' Luckily, Wendy
seems to have lucked out and been blessed with a prettier face than
that of her sister. Wendy seems to learn freeze as well as blaze spells,
which means that she has a somewhat better repertoire of magic
than her big sister.

 |
Apis
Ken's ugly son. Damn, is Apis ugly! What's with that facial expression?!
The word that comes to mind is 'dirty little kid.' He's not a knight!
He's that urchin who keeps getting his hands into the spaghetti sauce!
Unfortunately, he is actually pretty strong.
|
 |
Nick
The new hero of the game, who apparently looks 'just like Max.'
Nick has a name that is almost as boring and stupid as Max.
As usual, keep him away from the enemies, as if he dies, so does your game...
Nick actually learns a useful spell in this game besides 'return.'
|
 |
Clay
Clay is an ugly monk who looks like a raccoon. He's very welcome in
a party that, at the beginning of the game, has a sore lack of healing
power. Dang, but is Clay ugly. What's with the males in this game?
Clay gets very strong if you keep his levels up.
|
 |
Barry
Barry is a weakling birdman. He has great movement and he can fly, but
he's just so darn weak... Just make sure he gets to kill enemies every
so often, or he'll be unforgivingly weak. His portrait's kind of cool,
at least. But his defense is too low.
|
 |
Meifea
Meifea is a cute little healer who tends to die a lot. But what is that
little red spot on her head? She seems to have blue hair, but her field
graphics clearly show green. Equip her with a flail, and have her go
and kill a few monsters, or she will never catch up later on.
|
 |
Iisha
Iisha is a young wizardress whose spells don't seem all that different
from Wendy's. She seems to be better at freeze than blaze spells, however.
She is more the elegant (?) type than the cute type, it seems.
|
 |
Stock
Stock is an ugly ranger. Rangers, apparently, are just archers
who happen to be centaurs. If you give Stock a good weapon, he
can really cause havok out there. Although moving his hair away
from his eyes could help out his aim a bit.
|
 |
Teddy
Teddy is a new character class, a 'beastman.' He looks kind of cool,
and attacks doing a funky spiral thing. After he changes classes,
though, he degrades into doing rather mundane flying kicks... the old
attack was better. But what kind of a name is Teddy?!
|
 |
Domingo
Domingo is secret character #1. He returns from Shining Force I for
some reason much weaker (I guess he forgot his training) from his days of
being a near-invincible object with super-powerful freeze spells.
He seems to now learn blaze as well, for better or for worse. His
defense doesn't seem to be anywhere near what it used to be - so stay
away from the enemies!
|
 |
Kasshing
Who is Kasshing? He looks like an old knight. He's not really very
useful... I mean, we already have that ugly Apis, and other characters,
especially spellcasters, are more useful... oh well. He looks cooler
than Apis does, so it might be good to train him past Apis's level.
|
 |
Gates
Gates is a cool-looking dwarf, who looks much better than Ragu's (Luke's)
whole family of fat, red-nosed dwarves. Gates looks rather old, though.
Who cares if the Force is strong? You want a cook-looking force!
Gates happens to be strong, anyway.
|
 |
Shriek
Shriek is a birdman who also shows up in Shining Force II.
Or perhaps they are two different birdmen with the same names.
Because of the time discrepancies of the two games, it would
basically be impossible for the same birdman to be in both,
unless birdmen are extremely long lived...
|
 |
Randolf
Randolf is a knight with a rather ugly visage. He seems to have
the same name with a character in Shining Force II... a coincidence?
I'm pretty sure that centaurs don't live that long.
|
 |
Amigo
Amigo is secret character #2! She seems to be a female version of
Domingo, and talks with similar speech patterns. Like Domingo, she
can be quite useful, in her case being able to heal and attack,
with great movement capabilities.
|
 |
Dantom
The only baddie cool-looking enough to make it to this home page, Dantom
is a very cool beast-man who isn't all that bad compared to his allies.
He once served the former king of Cypress. Shriek says that he was saved
by Dantom... but why? Maybe he liked Shriek. Because they're both
half-animal? Who knows?
