The table below provides equivalents for the many prestige classes specific to the Forgotten Realms campaign setting, as well as a few classes from more general settings. Although equivalents do not necessarily have the same abilities or spell powers (many have changed considerably), there is often quite a bit of similarity as well. It is quite interesting to note that a great deal of 3rd Edition prestige classes have similar equivalents in 2nd Edition—more than one might expect at first. Certain classes have lost much of their originality in their conversion to 3rd Edition—notably, the runecaster has lost its uniqueness as a special type of spellcaster and is now more-or-less a priest with etching abilities. The change also removed the wizard-like dwarven runes, and dwarves now only etch priest spells as runes. Crusaders, mystics, and shamans also seem to have been removed, although I never personally liked them much in the first place...

Note that there are still many 2nd Edition classes that do not have equivalents in 3rd Edition as of yet—for example, dukars, dualist-mages, and many of the specialty priests of the various Faerûnian deities (especially demipowers and other regional powers). This list may be useful for players of 3rd Edition who will join a 2nd Edition game, but want to play one of their favorite prestige classes anyway. Note, however, that unlike prestige classes, equivalent 2nd Edition classes or kits are chosen at PC creation, not joined after advancing several levels, with several exceptions noted below. Of course, even in 2nd Edition, there are a number of pseudo-"Prestige Classes" or something to that order, including Elven High Mages, Dwarven High Old Ones, Swanmays, Liches, Archliches, the Chosen of a particular deity, and of course Dual-Classing.
