Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact
INTASC
# 1
· Brief Description of
Evidence:
Every day I spent around 30 minutes with a first grader
that needed a little more help with his phonics, spelling, and behaviors in the
hallway and classroom. Half of the time
would be spent on talking about his day and how he will behave for the day and
what the consequences are either good or bad.
The other half is spent on focusing on phonics with his spelling words
for the week.
· Analysis of What I Learned:
I look forward each day when I get to see Michale. I learn so much from him and him from
me. He benefits from having one on one
time with me but I also benefit because I am teaching and practicing my
communications skills.
· How This Artifact Demonstrates
my Competence on the INTASC Principle:
My artifact is one of my weekly lesson plans with
Michale. Without the knowledge of
phonics and spelling, I would not have been able to decide on activities that
would best be suited for Michale and his needs.
Objective:
Michale will be able to use phonics skills to spell his spelling words for the week.
Standards:
1.1.2 Identify letters, words, and
sentences.
1.1.5 Recognize different vowel sounds in orally stated single-syllable words.
1.1.7
Create and state a series of rhyming words.
1.6.8 Spell correctly three- and four-letter words and grade-level-appropriate sight words.
Prerequisite skills:
Michale should be able to write and understand letters.
Introduction:
Discuss
how he is doing and if he gets a sticker for having a fantastic day. Do this everyday!
While
talking about his spelling words make sure to use helpful hints to help him
remember how to spell the words. Ask if
he knows of any words that rhyme or if any of the words have any spelling
rules.
Lesson:
Tuesday-
Have
Michale fill in the box letter words, which help him figure out the letters by
the shape of the boxes, which is shaped similar to the letters. The boxed letters are on graph paper so the
boxes are closer to the appearance of the letters.
Wednesday-
On
a piece of graph paper have a box that is showing the shape of one of his
spelling words. This activity is
similar to hangman except for instead of doing the hangman part; build a
snowman for the letters that he misses.
Make sure he writes the letters inside of the boxes and crosses out the
letters that will not be used.
Friday-
Give
Michale a practice-spelling test on a small green chalkboard. Practice writing the letters correctly and
saying how they are spell during and after.
If there is enough time, finish playing the battle ship game with him.
Assessment:
Michale
will be given a spelling test each week with his classmates. If he passes the test with a 70% or greater
he will move on to the next spelling list.
If he is not able to pass the spelling test then we will go over the
words again for another week.
