SCHIZOAFFECTIVE DISORDER
(CONTINUED)
So, that's some background information on Schizoaffective Disorder.  Let's get to the meat of the matter: symptoms.  For symptoms of schizophrenia, please go to "Schizophrenia: The Basics."  Here we will talk about bipolar disorder (and as a result, depression), keeping in mind that our discussion includes symptoms of schizophrenia also.

Symptoms of Mania

1. either an elated, happy mood or an irritable,
    angry mood
2. increased activity and energy
3. racing thoughts
4. rapid, pressured speech usually jumping from
one topic to another and then yet another, etc.
5. grandiose plans
6. poor judgment
7. increased interest in sex
8. lack of need for sleep

Symptoms of Depression

1.  depressed mood, apathy
2.  decreased activity and energy (or restlessness
     and irritability instead)
3.  slowed thinking
4.  less talking and slowed speech
5.  loss of enjoyment in activities once enjoyable
6.  decreased interest in sex
7.  hopelessness
8.  helplessness
9.  pessimism
10. feelings of guilt and worthlessness
11. suicidal ideation
12. change in appetite
13. change in sleeping habits

These symptoms were paraphrased from the NAMI website.  They should be used with caution.  A person may experience some of these symptoms without being diagnosable with schizoaffective disorder.  Please, if you feel that you or a loved one have quite a few of these symptoms, seek help immediately.  Brain disease is not something you can think away; it takes medication, therapy, support, and a lot of hard work.  Please, consult a physician as soon as possible if you feel you meet the criteria for any brain disease.
