| Schizophrenia usually rears its ugly head in early adulthood. On average, males become symptomatic in their late teens to early 20's; females in their early to late 20's. Childhood sz is rare but does occur and I will devote space to it in "The Attic." The problem of schizophrenia is two-fold. First is the fiscal toll of the disease. Society has just invested thousands of dollars getting the afflicted person ready to become a productive member of society when the disease fully manifests itself. Now, not only is that money not used (in some cases), but the government (in most cases) has to take care of that person financially and provide treatment for the individual. More importantly is the problem that sz causes much more physical, psychological, and emotional pain for those involved (yes, the person with sz can be in real physical pain). (continued) |
