My name is Eline Boelee, born 4 August 1966 in Leiden, the Netherlands. I went to school there and in Hilversum. Later I did a Masters' on tropical rural engineering (irrigation & health) at Wageningen University and two years of philosophy in Nijmegen. My PhD research was on environmental control of schistosomiasis in Morocco. Since Septemer 1999 I work at the International Water Management Institute, first in Sri Lanka and since November 2003 in Ethiopia, based in its capital Addis Ababa, as a senior researcher on water and health.
Since 1983 I have a relationship with Fred Houtman, we got married in 1994 and together we adopted 2 boys: Saman from Sri Lanka and Yekuno from Ethiopia. We have had several cats, a dog and some tortoises, but these no longer live with us. In Addis we had two horses that we learned to ride (all but Yekuno).
In February 2009 we moved temporarily to the Netherlands, where we stay in our holiday house untill my health is fully back. We hope to move to East Asia in the second half of 2009.
