February 13th 1998

I woke up at the Holiday Inn in downtown Toronto.  That's where Mike Bullard's show put us up.  Gorgeous hotel, nice view.
I was woken up at around 7:30 a.m. by Merilyn, our producer.  She had just picked up copies of The Toronto Sun, and Star.
Both papers had written great reviews about the show, they had pictures of me up on the post, it was great.
Derek and I went down to the coffee shop downstairs and read the articles.  It was pretty weird reading about the show in two major papers on the same day.  We were pretty happy.  I guess it could have gone either way, but luckily the people at the paper seem to think our show is all right.

We had a long drive back to Ottawa.

There was a party at this insane little bar in Ottawa.  Everyone on the crew of the show was meeting at The Concorde hotel at 9:00pm.  We were all gonna drink beer, and watch the show.  The bar is hilarious, because it is a dive in a seedy part of town.  It's filled with weirdo's and drunken social outcasts.  It is the perfect place for people like us to have a party.
I think the show that aired this week was all right.  I'll be honest, it isn't our best show.
I think there were some things in the show that I would have done differently.
But in general, it was all right.

I think when I look at our entire series, I think the shows will get better as we go along.
There are a few segments airing in next weeks show that I like a lot more than anything that aired on friday.
But again, I am far too close to this thing.  It's hard for me to judge it anymore.
It was a relief to see that when I got home at the end of the night people on the web really liked what they saw.
This website has become a real stress relief for me, because whenever I get worried that the show is sucking, I come on here and you people say your liking it.  Thanks, I like you people... you're nice.

Here's a weird little soap opera for you too enjoy.

Tony Atherton of The Ottawa Citizen, he is the television writer for that little paper.
He has been following our show in this city for years.  The funny thing about Tony Atherton is he is one of these people that doesn't really like our show.  He doesn't really get the humour.  Keep in mind he is an old guy, and old guys don't always understand the weird side of what we do.

So Tony Atherton wrote an article this week that was alright.  It wasn't great, but it also wasn't a complete diss...  It was just okay.  He tends to not be too enthusiastic about our show, because he thinks it sucks right.

Merilyn, our producer was pissed off when she saw the article.  She called Tony Atherton at home at 8:30 in the morning and gave him a piece of her brain.  She was mad.  She was mad that a guy from our hometown paper couldn't be a little more supportive of our show on the eve of it's national debut.  I guess this pissed Tony off that Merilyn woke him up, so a couple of days later... Today, he slagged the shit out of our show in the paper.  It was funny, because that picture of me on the post was in The Ottawa Citizen today, and then a few pages later Atherton was slagging the show.  He only wrote a few lines in the "What's On" section....  But it was slagging us.  It was something like this....  "Check out Ottawa's own Tom Green Show, it sucks!"   Now that's supporting the hometown, like, Go Ottawa Go!

I think it's pretty funny that a fifty year old guy at The Ottawa Citizen is slagging me and my friends.

Obviously that's hilarious.  I actually like Tony Atherton's writing, which makes it even more strange to see him slag us.  I like the way he writes because he is very imaginative in his articles.  He must have a really good thesaurus on his word processor because he never fails to come up with exciting words that nobody has ever heard before.  It's a cool way to write because it makes the writer appear really smart.  And It's kind of sad when a smart fifty year old slags your show.  Because you know that he is really smart with the big words he uses, so that must also mean he's correct in his opinions....  I mean his words are big and he's smart, so how can he be wrong?

So Merilyn and Tony are now at war.
The Ottawa Citizen has declared war on The Tom Green Show.
One of our hometown papers...  It makes me sad.

The Ottawa Sun was great to us, The Toronto Sun, The Toronto Star, CTV television, CJOH television, The Mix and The Edge in Toronto, The Bear 106.9 in Ottawa, CBC radio....  They all supported the show... and they didn't have to, they could have slagged us too, but they chose not too.  I guess they liked our show.  I guess because the people at these places aren't still considering  Bob Hope to be cutting edge.

Tony Atherton and The Ottawa Citizen hate us.  They hate The Tom Green Show.  They love Bob Hope.

Well I just want to let you know, that I still like The Ottawa Citizen, and I still like Tony Atherton's writing.  I hope that Tony doesn't think we can't talk anymore after he slammed my life in the paper, because we can...  We can still talk because I still do have an utmost respect for his writing, and the unique and exciting edge that he gives to reporting on television.

I especially like the way he has written three articles on The Tom Green Show, but he has never once interviewed me.

I consider that good journalism.  To not interview Tom Green when  writing several articles on The Tom Green Show....  Now that makes me want to go buy an Ottawa Citizen, because that is creative journalism...  I wonder if they just make up all the stories off the top of their heads in that paper....  I mean it  must take a lot of  creativity to just make up a story off the top off your head like that...

See ya tomorrow

Tom
