Some of you may already know about our joyful news, but we wanted to make sure EVERYBODY knows!
On 2 January at 802pm, our beautiful daughter Amelia Merritt Parsons was born at Vassar Hospital in Poughkeepsie, NY. She weighed in at 2lbs, 8oz & 15 1/2 inches (7 weeks early due to Elizabeths complications w/ preeclampsia & smaller than normal due to a naughty placenta). Amelia lived for just over seven days, dying as a result of a disease called Necrotizing Enterocolitis, which killed her in less than 12 hours.
While we are still shocked and sad, we wanted to share with you her love and our joy and pride in being her parents. In her short and brilliant life (we liken her to a supernova), Amelia impacted our lives and others in ways we never expected.
She taught us what we are like as parents, reminded us how in love with each other we are, and brought together families and strangers in love. She was a feisty, spirited, and healthy little girl, showing us and her medical family at Vassar how to embrace life no matter how big you are. We all expected her to come home with us after she gained a few more pounds.
Amelias gift to us is the awe and wonder with which we see everyday life with new eyes. We are parents now, & her passing has matured our resolve both in our lives & hearts to ensure that we love, listen, learn, and act. Thank you for your love and friendship & for sharing in our lasting joy of Amelia. She is not a loss but a gain!
With love, Michael, Elizabeth, and Amelia!
Wishing you all a New Year full of love and peace.
The soul that knows it not knows no release from little things;
Knows not the livid loneliness of fear,
Nor mountain heights where bitter joy can hear the sound of wings.
How can life grant us boon of living, compensate for dull grey ugliness and pregnant hate unless we dare the souls dominion?
Each time we make a choice we pay with courage to behold the restless day
and count it fair.

This site is the site of a local photographer in Leelanau County, Michigan, who goes out daily and snaps a picture of this beautiful county. This is the area where my husband and I got married and where my extended family has made a point of vacationing every year for almost 70 years. This site makes me feel closer to the idea of home while I am off in strange and dangerous places with the Army.
