This project started after I had my 1963 Fairlane 500 towed one too many times, and decided that I needed a way to tow it myself. I found a jeep with a good heavy duty stock setup, and lots of spare parts. This is what I had after the rusty body came off. |

Here is what I had to work with. An 304 amc engine, T-176 manual 4-speed, Dana 300 transfer case. Everything on this CJ was stock. |

I had to replace the rear crossmember, and reinforce a small section of the frame that was thin under the drivers seat. I took the frame down the bare metal using an angle grinder with a wire brush attachment. |

The tub was cut off behind the front seats, and only good for use as a firewall template for the new fiberglass body. The hood, fenders, tailgate, and grill were almost perfect, but I wanted to go with a fiberglass tub and 1-piece front end. |

The frame is coated with Por-15. I welded on a new rear crossmember, and reinforced the body mounts. I ran all stainless steel brake and fuel lines, and put in a new plastic gas tank and diamond plate skid plate. Mechanical replacements include a new oil pan, dip stick, chrome valve covers, fuel pump, solinoid, roters, wheel cylinders, and bearings. |
