eb00ks FAQ
General Information and Rules:
General Information:
(1) What is an ebook?
In simple terms, it is a book you can read on your computer because some kind person has taken the time and effort to scan it.
(2) Are they illegal?
Depends on the date of publishing of the book. Of course, a copyright in one country may be invalid in another. Some sites have done an excellent job in providing public domain (non-copyright) books in digital format. Examples are the University of Pennsilvania: Digital Library that has over 20,000 books, and the Project Gutenberg which is a voluntary organization that scans public domain books and serves them online. On the other end, private individuals are often involved in scanning recent books to make them available for the rest of us. These are usually distributed through the IRC, to avoid legal actions. We ourselves are primarily interested in only the recntly published books. Any way, as long as the ebooks are not on this site, or not linked from here directly, the Ebooks Forum is on the right side of the law. That is why the ebooks are not stored here.
(3) Where do you get the ebooks?
You can either scan them yourself, find them at various sites on the internet (some listed here), or download them off of IRC. There is a wonderful FAQ here.
Rules:
(1) Be polite. No spam or cursing in the posts please, they are for the discussion of books or ebooks, announcing uploads, and informing members of changes. The occasional off topic post is all right, but please remember that the purpose of this Group is to share ebooks.
(2) When posting, please snip the longer posts if you are replying to someone. If you need to, you may quote the other person. Otherwise, those who choose to have individual mail and daily digest will have their mailboxes clogged.
(3) Discussion is discussion. Flaming, insulting, or threatening another member is not allowed. So far, to my knowledge, this has not happened before. :)
The Moderators have a right to reinforce any and all rules. They may ban or warn any person they think is misusing any part of the Group. They are the ones who usually organize the unsorted books, so don't be surprised if your book has suddenly disappeared. Most likely a Mod has moved it to another Group. If you have questions or suggestions, you may reach them at:

(1) How do I download?
Navigate to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ebooks-ebooks. On the main page, there is a link to the Virtual Library. Click on it. NOTE - The VIRTUAL LIBRARY is no more linked from here.
(2) How do I download the X-Men Comics?
Click on the link to the X-Men comic you want from the
X-Men Comic page of the
Virtual Library.
You will be taken to a folder containing a number of files, having extensions as
".1", ".2", etc. Download ALL the files that you see. Then, double click on the
file having the ".bat" extension. This will recreate the .zip file from the
files you downloaded. You may delete the other files once you have obtained the
.zip file, then decompress the .zip file to get the X-Men comic in pdf format.
NOTE -
If there is no file with a ".bat" extension, but there is a file named "Ulti.txt",
rename it to "Ulti.bat" and then double click on it.
(3) I get the message "you are not a member ... " while trying to download.
You need to be a member of the group from which you are downloading. This group, i.e. ebooks-ebooks, doesn't store any books, here you can only talk about books! But you may find here some required software like WinRAR, DocReader, etc.
(1) How do I upload?
Please check the existing books to see if the file you are uploading already exists. When uploading, please keep in mind that the most important thing is to share with other people. Though it is not necessary, it is certainly more convenient if the file is accessible to most people! For example, you can assume that most people have Winzip and the ability to read txt., Word, and html files. You can not assume that everyone knows how to read prc. files. Last of all, announce it to the Group so that people know where it is! If you are filling in a request, please also go back in fill in the "filled by."
(2) What kinds of books should/can I upload?
You may upload any genre you wish, non-fiction, fiction, comics, ect. Please remember that this is not an adult restricted forum, anything you post is accessible to anyone.
NOTE - Uploading is not permitted here in THIS group (i.e. ebooks-ebooks) at the moment.
(1) How do I open .rar files?
You need WinRAR. You can download it from here. (Windows only)
(2) How do I open .lit files?
You need Microsoft Reader. (Windows only)
(3) How do I open .pdb or .prc files?
You need DocReader. You can download it from here. (Windows only)
(4) How do I open .pdf files?
You need Adobe Acrobat Reader. (Most platforms)
There is a database here, where you may fill in a request and hopefully, have it granted. It is more likely to be granted if you also post a message, asking members if they have the book. It is advised that you first make sure the book isn't in any of the sorted or unsorted Groups before requesting. Any member filling the request should edit the request to add his/her id under "filled by", and mention location where the ebook has been uploaded.
(1) Why can't I download some of the ebooks?
1) The group has exceeded the download limit for the day (20MB). Just wait a day or two before trying again. 2) Sometimes Yahoo just has problems. Wait and try again later, or use right click and save target as (only works sometimes).
