Exclusive Interview:
Joe Ferriell
10/22/05
Joe Ferriell is one of broomball's most famous faces.  Tough, competitive, yet sportsmanlike and cuddly, Joe has been ranked as one of the EBL's top players for many years.  Our EBL web site correspondent sat down with Joe for an exclusive interview...

1. You are considered one of broomball's biggest stars.  How do you deal with that pressure?
Well, I am glad you asked, as you well know being isn't just about giving the crowd what they want. But there are little things like making sure I am in top shape.  It takes a lot of practice with my stick so that I know where the balls are going to go when I start to bang them; I have gotten really good according to my coach B. Banks.

2. How do you prepare for a broomball game (mentally and physically)?
Mentally it's hard.  You've got a lot of players on the ice with different backgrounds.  I have an advantage as many of the people who stalk me well know I work at a jail.  Constantly being called names and getting into fights help me prepare.  As far as physically, you would have to talk to my private trainer Laini Unger.

3. You are engaged to one of the top female players, Laini Unger.  How does that affect your play when she is on your team...or the opposing team?
Well, when she is on my team it's great because I can be more offensive-minded because I don't have to worry about someone getting past her.  When she's on the other team it causes two main problems: 1. I have to play more defense.  2. I have to try harder to score.  You see the problem Laini creates.  This is why the team she is on is usually the winning one.  But like I stated, she is my "personal trainer" so I know her pretty well.

4. Coming back from over a dozen knee surgeries must have been difficult.  Did you ever doubt that you would ever return to the sport of broomball?

No, I always knew I would come back.  In a way it wa a blessing because now I weigh in at about 235 so people are more apt to get out of my way.

5. Does it make you angry when all the hot female fans attending your games cheer more for Anthony than for you?
No because he is a sexy man.  What woman wouldn't want that?  But the lucky ones know that I am the better guy because of, well let's just say my "broomball stick" is to scale.

6. Does it bother you when Anthony brags that his wife has a bigger rack than Laini?
Yes, a little, because she has had two kids.  But Anthony's wife no longer plays broomball so she is no longer the female with the biggest rack.  Laini is now the undisputed champion.

7. Do you agree that there should be some form of competition, viewed by you and Anthony, to determine who has the bigger rack.
YES, absolutely, but to be fair it can't just be between Laini and Courtney.  No, we need all the females
of age to compete.

8. If you had to describe yourself as a broomball player in one word, what would it be?
Well, it's so hard with only one word, but I would say what everyone else says when they watch me...WOW.

9. You have been an advocate for sportsmanship on the ice.  You have been very outspoken when players misbehave such as calling others names with expletives.  Without naming names, could you elaborate on these feelings?
I like to make sure everyone is having fun and being competitve but when someone gets out of control, I take it upon myself to set them straight.

10. What words of wisdom do you have for the future of broomball players in America?
Stay in shape, remember where you came from, and find a girl with a huge rack.

11. Any other thoughts or comments you would like to share?
Yes, and this is the most important of all.  I am now 6-0 in fantasy football and it is my first year.  Jeff and Chad's records are horrible.  That's it for now.
