What if we told you that some of the best food available in this area was served by a restaurant in Utopia? Well, it is true, and dont go searching any maps of Tennessee looking for Utopia. The Utopia we are referring to is Rugby, TN, the town in Morgan County, which was founded in 1880 by British author, statesman, and social reformer Thomas Hughes. His aim was to provide a perfect place where young sons of English Gentry and anyone else who wished to come, could "begin life anew" in America.

No visit to Rugby is complete without enjoying a meal at The Harrow Road Caf. A sign in the parking lot reads "Good Food Since the 1880s". They are not kidding either. Here you will find a culinary treat that you and your family will remember for a long time. The Harrow Road Caf is owned and operated by Non-Profit Historic Rugby, and the whole town is a National Register Historic Site. The organization was founded in 1966 to restore and preserve all the beautiful old buildings that were built by Thomas Hughes and his followers.
One look at the menu and you feel as if you are in jolly old England. Traditional British Pub food is yours for the asking. During our visit, we sampled the Bangers & Mash, which consists of Grilled Sausages served over Pan Sauted Mashed Potatoes and Cabbage, commonly referred to as Bubble & Squeak. We also tried their version of Fish & Chips, which was just as good as any served in the finest pubs in London.

Other highly recommended menu items are Shepherds Pie, a casserole of Roast Beef and vegetables topped with Mashed Potatoes and Cheddar Cheese, and the Welsh Rarebit, which is Sharp Cheddar Cheese, Worcestershire Sauce, and Dijon Mustard served over Bacon, Tomato, and Onion on a Grilled English Muffin. We have to take a second to mention the Homemade Yeast Rolls. They are spectacular.

If British food is not your cup of tea (pardon the pun), you will enjoy the Bacon Cheeseburger, Mushroom Swiss Burger, the Harrow Club Sandwich, or the Hot Roast Beef Sandwich. Several nice salads and homemade soups are also on the menu.

The dessert menu leaves little to be desired. You can choose from Apple Crunch, Ice Cream Sundaes, Tom Brownie Pie (named for Tom Brown, Thomas Hughes most famous literary character), Coconut Cream Pie, and Peanut Butter Pie. The Peanut Butter Pie is a little slice of heaven. Try a pieceor two.

The Harrow Road Caf is open every day. Sunday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. The most important thing to remember is that Rugby is located in the Eastern Time Zone. Keep that in mind when planning your visit. If you need information on Rugby or The Harrow Road Caf, call 1-888-214-3400 or visit them online at www.historicrugby.org.
