PUBLIC CORPORATION FOR THE ARTS AND THE EAST VILLAGE ASSOCIATION TO DEDICATE
TRACE FUKUHARAS PEACE FLORA

Peace Flora represents a collaborative effort involving the Public Corporation for the Arts (PCA), the East Village Association (EVA), and the artist, Trace Fukuhara. In 2002, EVA was awarded a PCA Model Projects grant to support the design and installation of Fukuharas Peace Flora, which was endorsed by the Armory as part of ongoing efforts to beautify the Seventh Street corridor.

Peace Flora distinguishes itself as an eleven-foot sculpture that is directly involved in the urban environment because its locationon the sidewalk in the public right-of-way. The tall, graceful sculpture is covered in its entirety with hand-painted and fired tiles. Fukuhara worked with students from Constellation Middle School to design and paint the tiles. Selected students also had the opportunity to assist with installing the tiles on site.

Fukuhara envisioned Peace Flora, as a symbol of peace, noble in height and beautiful in color that projects harmony and crosses all barriers of ethnic and cultural differences.
