| This was quite possibly the best birthday gift that I got this year, and it was from that sexy guitarist from T.E.A.M. yeah I know him. This cd was the first real "emo" cd that I ever owned and it is a very fine one at that. This is Their third and latest album, and it is in my opinion the best, which some people may disagree. This album is one of the best "postemo" albums that I've ever heard though, and that's what matters. Saves the Day mix the anger of punk, with the sadness factor of emo, or is it the other way around? Whatever. The main thing is is that they mix punk and emo together, and do it well. They mix up the whole three/four chord progression with more compex riffs, which is a nice change from everything else. The two guitarists do seem to do alot of different things, sort of feeding off eachother rather than both playing the same thing, which is another nice change from everything else. On top of that, the bassist is effin awesome! The bassist doesn't just play along with the guitars, he does anything but. He adds some of the craziest fills, and he also sometimes harmonizes with the guitars, can't go wrong there. Speaking of harmonizing, almost every song is sung with harmonies, and there's just a whole lot of harmonies, and it sounds really great. Alot of the times they harmonize throughout most of the song, rather than just the chorus. The drums are also very very awesome as well, he uses alot of off beat cymbals and etc. And now we add really well written emo lyrics, and you get Saves the Day. This is another one of my favourite cd's for lyrics, shall we take for instance: "Her life was magazines, and faithful tv screens, selling an empty dream of cars and calories everything inbetween the sun and saturn's ring, but the price tag can't be seen and it took bites, out of her insides till she was just a hallow shell." - from: Cars and Calories. The rest of the song goes on to talk about, well sort of about a girl with an eating disorder, or more a girl that is insecure about her weight. Now that song may not be very pretty, but some of their other songs can be, and some can be even worse. Some songs even deal with.. Death?!?! *gasp* but in a good way. Check out "As Your Ghost Takes Flight" to find out about killing people in harsh ways. So anyways, this cd took a bit of time for me to warm up to, but after a couple times through it, well let's just say it grew on me. The singers voice is a bit on the high and whiny side, which is what I think took some getting used to, but it goes really well with the rest of the parts. I give it a 4/5, it is really good. |
