Midget 'A' Winterhawks 1-3 at Provincials
The East Kings Midget 'A' Winterhawks were disappointed at the Provincials finishing fourth with a 1-3 record. However, as prepared as they were for the competition, nothing could have prepared them for the opening day of competition.
The Winterhawks first opponent was the gold medal winner, Kentville Canadians. The lead flip-flopped throughout the game but after 3 periods of play the teams were tied at four. In the Provincial format there are no ties so the two teams embarked into overtime. Kentville finally scored with about 2 minutes remaining in the third overtime to win 5-4.
The result, although disappointing, was not the end of the tournament for the team. The longevity of the game, however, took its toll on the Winterhawks because they had to play another game 1.5 hours later. Their opponent was the silver medallist from Cape Breton. The game saw the tired Winterhawk players claw back time and time again but ended up on the losing end 4-3.
Still not out of the tournament East Kings played the next morning and narrowly defeated Cole Harbour 4-3. Still feeling the effects of the night before, the Winterhawks squared off to play Truro in the afternoon. The teams entered the third period tied at three but Truro scored a pair of goals enroute to a 5-3 victory.
The players played well throughout the tournament and gave it their all, unfortunately that was not enough for this weekend. Bret Garby was chosen to the tournament All-star on defense. Bret had an outstanding tournament scoring his first goal of the season and chipping in with 3 assists and was stellar on the point dishing out many punishing checks as well as being on the receiving end of a couple. Honourable mentions should also go out to both Ryan Murphy and Morgan Steele who finished the tournament tied for second in scoring with 8 points each.
In case anyone was at the last game and saw me run out of the arena without shaking hands as the final buzzer sounded it should be noted that I was pushing the envelope by staying as long as I did. I had a vehicle waiting in the parking lot to rush me to the airport to catch a plane to Toronto to coach my CF Female hockey team at the CF Nationals. Unfortunately we lost in overtime in the semi-finals so a new champion was crowned this year.
Thanks to Kentville for hosting the Provincial tournament and congratulations on winning the gold medal. The coaching staff and the players would like to say an appreciative thank you to all of the fan support during both the season and the Provincials and to NS Power for their generous financial donation to purchase equipment for the team. The Winterhawks are now preparing for their final tournament of the season at SEDMHA, as they take on the Yarmouth Mariners Minor Midget AAA team in a 'home and home' series.
