Winterhawks Dig Deep at the Spud Tournament

A few pics from the Dieppe Game

The East Kings Winterhawks Midget 'A' team traveled to PEI on the weekend of 6-8 Feb for a Midget 'AA' tournament and were great ambassadors of the game, representing the Valley area with pride. The speed and smart tactical playing of the team helped to level the playing field somewhat.

Game one's adversary were the Charlottetown Abbies. East Kings came out of the gate flying, taking a one-goal lead after one and holding a 4-1 lead heading into the intermission. Despite some pressure from Charlottetown in the 3rd, Ian Brown, the game's 1st star, was able to hold the fort and earn the 4-3 victory. Leading the attack for the Winterhawks was the 2nd star of the game, Ryan Murphy, with 4(1-3) points. Also with 4 points was Adam Brewster 4(1-3), while Ethan Bent had 2(1-1), Chris Moore had a goal and Morgan Steele had an assist.

Game 2 against Dieppe-Memracook was a hard fought game with no scoring until Chris Moore scored with 8 minutes to play in the 3rd as he was set up on a beautiful passing play down low by Evan Wittenberg and Brandon Conrad. The 1st star was Evan Warner with a shutout while 2nd star honors went to Chris Moore.

Game 3 was another closely contested game with no scoring until midway in the 3rd when Morgan Steele let a blast go on a set-up by Ethan Bent. Evan Wittenberg then closed out the scoring with 2 minutes to play with assists awarded to Chris Moore and Chris Chute. Ian Brown recorded the shutout while 1st and 2nd star honors went to Bret Garby and Brandon Benjamin respectively.

Since only the top team from each division plus 1 wild card advanced to the semis, we faced off against another undefeated team from Pictou County. This game had all the makings of a blowout. The Pictou team outweighed the Winterhawks by about 20 pounds per player as well as having a few giants on their team. They also scored 3 goals by the 8-minute mark of the 1st and although other teams may have thrown in the towel East Kings pushed on. The game's momentum switched in the second period as the Winterhawks realized that size doesn't always matter and they pounded the Pictou goalie with 12 shots and headed into the intermission down 3-1. Using that momentum in the 3rd East Kings pressured in the 3rd and despite scoring late in the game they had to settle for a 3-2 loss but came away knowing that victory was well within their grasp. Goal scorers for East Kings were Chris Moore and Morgan Steele while single assists were awarded to Ryan Murphy, Chris Chute and Travis Sanford. The games 1st and 2nd stars were Ryan Murphy and Chris Chute.

East Kings returned home to play the West Hants Warriors 14 and 15 Feb in the drive to Provincials. Results were unknown at the time of this article submission, however the winner advances to the final elimination round against the Halifax representative next week. Stay tuned right here for the latest updates.
