Winterhawks Drop Two at Berwick Tournament
The East Kings Winterhawks entered the Berwick Tournament on a 2 game losing streak and played like they had something to prove. Despite the game being tied at 1-1 after one it was all Winterhawks out-chancing their Berwick opponents about 10-2. The Bruins scored early in the second but then the Winterhawks stormed back with 5 unanswered goals for a 6-2 victory. Playing well in nets to earn the win was Ian Brown. Pointgetters for East Kings were Brandon Conrad scoring his first 2 goals of the season 2(2-0), Andy Clement with 2(1-1), Adam Brewster 2(1-1), Evan Wittenberg 2(0-2) and Ryan Murphy 2(0-2) while Mike Sponagle and Travis Sanford chipped in with a goal apiece. Chris Chute, Jeff Lawrence and Brandon Benjamin each earned an assist. The game MVP for the Winterhawks was Andy Clement.
Next up to face the Winterhawks were the Warriors from West Hants. The Winterhawks were all over the Warriors in the first but the score was tied 1-1after a bad bounce went in over Evan Warner's shoulder. East Kings scored with 5 minutes remaining in the second only to have West Hants score a pair late in the period to go up 3-2. During the 3rd period the Winterhawks were the victim of some questionable calls in a close game and despite pressing hard throughout the period it wasn't to be and the score finished 3-2. Leading the way for East Kings were Mike Sponagle with a goal and an assist, Ryan Murphy with a goal plus Ethan Bent and Adam Brewster chipping in with single assists. Game MVP for East Kings was Ryan Murphy.
The next morning both Kentville and East Kings showed up to play a 9am game only to find out that the game was actually at 9pm. This error really threw a glitch into the Winterhawks because 4 of their players were not able to play that evening due to work commitments. The first period was pretty evenly played but the Canadians capitalized on a couple of miscues and lead 2-0 after one. Kentville added 3 more before the Winterhawks scored a couple late in the 3rd, one goal called back, and East Kings lost 5-1. Morgan Steele, the Winterhawks game MVP, scored their lone goal assisted by Brandon Benjamin and Bret Garby.
East Kings play host to Berwick at Acadia on Sat at 3:50pm before travelling to Clare on Sun for a 1:40 game.
