Winterhawks Winless on the Weekend

The East Kings Winterhawks have participated in the Western Nova Midget Hockey league for the past two seasons and for the first time didn't earn a single point in weekend action. First up to face the Winterhawks were the West Hants Warriors looking to avenge a 9-3 loss earlier in the season. Before the game was 9 minutes old the Warriors took a commanding 3-0 lead and never looked back. Entering the intermission the Winterhawks were down 4-0 and despite a spirited 3rd period and a goal by Mike Sponagle, on a set up from Adam Brewster and Morgan Steele, they would get no closer and were defeated by a 4-1 score.

Next up was the long drive to Yarmouth to face the Mariners, also looking to avenge a loss suffered earlier in the season. Despite playing with a much-depleted squad the Winterhawks were only down 2-1 after one period of play thanks to a goal by Mike Sponagle on a nice set up by Chris Moore and Brandon Conrad. Both teams traded goals early in the second when Brandon Benjamin converted a pass from Evan Wittenberg to narrow the gap 3-2 but it was all Mariners from there as they went on to crush the Winterhawks by a 9-2 score.

The Winterhawks look to regain their winning ways as they square off to face local teams in the Berwick Midget 'A' tournament. First up was a game last night against Berwick. Their next opponent will be the West Hants Warriors tonight in Kingston at 7:15pm and the Kentville Canadians Saturday morning, 9am also at the Kingston arena. The championship game will be Sunday evening at the Berwick arena, game time 7:45pm. See you there.
