Winterhawks Split a Pair of Road Games
The East Kings Midget 'A' Winterhawks squared off against their arch rivals Kentville Canadians last Friday but came out on the losing end of a 5-4 score.
The Canadians opened the scoring early in the first on a power play goal by Sean Harrison. The Winterhawks then answered with a goal of their own late in the period when Ryan Murphy converted feeds from Evan Wittenberg and Andy Clement to even the score after one.
The Winterhawks carried that momentum into the second when Evan Wittenberg scored in the first minute on passes from Chris Moore and Corey Chapman. The score continued to change hands as Kentville scored two quick goals midway thru the second while Ryan Murphy answered twice more late in the second, one on the power play, to round out his first hat trick of the season and gave East Kings a 4-3 lead heading into the third.
Despite playing a fairly even third period the Winterhawks failed to hold the lead and came up on the short end of a 5-4 loss. Pointgetters for the Winterhawks were Ryan Murphy 3 (3-0), Evan Wittenberg 2 (1-1), Brandon Benjamin 2 (0-2) and Corey Chapman 2 (0-2) while Andy Clement, Chris Moore and Morgan Steele each added an assist. Replying for the Canadians were Justin MacDonald 3 (1-2), Adrian Graves 2 (2-0), Ryan Hill 2 (0-2), TJ Greenough (0-2), Travis Jordon 2 (1-1) and Sean Harrison 1 (1-0) with an assist given to Mike Smith and Nathan Zwicker.
Game two was played in Berwick on Sunday and with the game only 5 minutes old; Travis Sanford scored a goal on a set-up by Evan Wittenberg. Berwick then replied late in the period on a power play goal by Greg Coolen, assisted by Ryan Patterson.
The second and third period belonged to the Winterhawks and except for the solid net minding of Berwick's Mike Dakin; the final score of 3-1 could have been a lot higher. Scoring for the Winterhawks in the third was an unassisted marker by Ryan Murphy and a sweet goal by Morgan Steele from behind the net with assists awarded to Adam Brewster and Ryan Murphy.
The Winterhawks play at Acadia on Saturday against West Hants at 3:50 then travel to Yarmouth on Sunday for a 2:30 matinee game.
