Winterhawks off to a 3-0 Start

The East Kings Midget 'A' Winterhawks played the Yarmouth Mariners 'A' team last Saturday at Acadia. This was the second game of the season for the Winterhawks and despite playing with a depleted squad of 11 players, the game lived up to it's billing.

Yarmouth opened the scoring midway thru the 1st after Brandon Conrad made 3 saves before the 4th shot was put past him. With less than 5 minutes to play in the 1st Morgan Steele won the draw back to Mike Sponagle who shot a low shot from the point. The goaltender made a save but Morgan pounced on the rebound and buried a wrist shot deep in the twine.

Yarmouth scored quickly to open the 2nd, however the Winterhawks were relentless and before the end of the period they pulled ahead on goals by Sponagle and Steele. The 2nd goal was a feed by Andy Clement into the corner to Ryan Murphy who spotted Sponagle in the slot and fed him a soft pass that Mike buried deep with a bullet slapshot. Travis Sanford set up the 3rd goal on a delay at the hash marks, then fed a pass to Steele who scored on a slap shot.

The 3rd period was all Winterhawks, allowing Yarmouth 1 shot on net. The defence stood them up at the blue line forcing many turnovers. Early in the 3rd period Morgan Steele capped off his hat trick on passes from Evan Wittenberg and Ryan Murphy. Then late in the period Ryan Murphy rounded out the scoring when Andy Clement won a defensive zone face off and Adam Brewster gathered up the puck and fed Ryan who broke away from the pack and was hauled down while he was shooting and still managed to lift it over the goaltender. Player of the game went to Morgan Steele on the strength of his 3-goal game and his constant pressure in the offensive zone.

The Winterhawks played the West Hants 'A' team on Sunday in what proved to be a 'lively' game. East Kings led 2-0 after one in a close checking affair. Tempers flared on both sides in the 2nd as West Hants outscored East Kings 2-1 to narrow the gap after two. In the third period the doors fell off the Warriors as their bench went down to 2 spares while the Winterhawks slimmed to 4 spares and the Winterhawks won in a romp 9-3. Evan Warner played well between the pipes to earn the victory. Equal to the task was Bret Garby who was stellar in his defensive plays and outlet passes.

Leading the way for the Winterhawks were Morgan Steele with 5 (2-3), Ryan Murphy 4 (2-2), Mike Sponagle 4 (1-3), Adam Brewster 2(2-0) and Corey Chapman 2 (0-2). Single goals by Chris Moore and Corey Chapman and single assists to Chris Chute and Andy Clement rounded out the scoring. Player of the game was Mike Sponagle scoring a goal, adding 3 assists and led the attack many times from deep in the defensive zone.

The Winterhawks play in Kentville tonight at 6:30pm then travel to Berwick on Sunday at 10:30am.
