Provincial Playdowns - Midget 'A' Winterhawks Win Opener
The East Kings Winterhawks played a couple of Provincial rivals last weekend and skated away with 3 points.
Game one featured the first game of a best of three with the Greenwood Bombers. The Winterhawks took control from the opening face-off, scoring early when Morgan Steele converted a feed from Ryan Murphy and Adam Brewster and found the back of the twine.
The second period was more evenly played as Greenwood responded with a goal of their own midway through the period when Devon Bezanson scored, assisted by Shaun Doucette and Alex Egan. The Winterhawks then scored a couple of minutes later when Morgan scored his second goal of the game with assists awarded to Brandon Conrad and Corey Chapman. During the second period intermission the coaching staff reiterated to the players the value of team play and intensity, which seemed to light the only fire the Winterhawks displayed throughout the game. East Kings came flying out of the gate and immediately scored a goal when Ryan Murphy slid one on the ice from the slot on a set up by Adam Brewster and Morgan Steele. Brandon Benjamin then responded with a goal on his first shift of the third, assisted by Travis Sanford and Ethan Bent.
The Winterhawks then got into a bit of a penalty problem taking 6 minors in the third and was able to kill off all 6, behind the stellar goaltending of Evan Warner and a very disciplined, yet aggressive penalty killing system of the team.
Game two of the weekend featured a long anticipated rematch between two archrivals, East Kings and Kentville. The Canadians had won the previous two by 5-4 and 5-1 scores. The Winterhawks played the game with 9 skaters until 2 more arrived midway through the 2nd period.
East Kings pressured Kentville early and often, out-shooting them 11-3 and scored the only goal of the period when Ryan Murphy fed Morgan Steele in the slot who put a slap shot through the legs of Neil Morrison.
The second period was more evenly played with both teams exchanging 5 shots on net but both goalies were up to the task. The third period saw the Winterhawks pressure the Canadians with an 11-4 shot margin but it was Kentville who scored the only goal of the period during a power play at the beginning of the period when Justin MacDonald scored, assisted by Nathan Zwicker. Ian Brown played extremely well between the pipes for the Winterhawks, making many key saves throughout the game.
Up next for the Winterhawks is game 2 of the Provincial Playdowns against the Bombers in Greenwood Saturday 31 Jan at 7:45 pm. East Kings then travel on Sunday to Liverpool for a 3 pm rubber match where each team has won a game by a single goal.
