Midget 'A' Winterhawks on a Roll
The East Kings Winterhawks travelled to Bridgewater with a shortened roster last Saturday evening and played a very entertaining and physical game. The Winterhawks opened the scoring quickly when Ethan Bent, playing his first shift of the game, scored a nice rebound goal when a blast from Jeff Lawrence was stopped but left unattended. East Kings second goal of the game was very much like their first goal when Mike Sponagle took a low, hard slap from the point and Morgan Steele corralled the rebound and slid the puck low on the ice to the back of the net.
The game featured many strong hits by Bret Garby and Brandon Benjamin, to name a few, plus some stellar goaltending by Evan Warner and strong defensive team play. The closely contested game was much needed for the team as they have been rolling along, winning their last 7 games and out-scoring their opponents 34-3, recording 4 shutouts and 3 one-goal against games.
Game two featured a rematch against a very strong Midget AA team from Liverpool. The last time these two met East Kings won 2-1. The game started out with Liverpool scoring 2 goals in the first period and another early in the second to go up 3-0. The Winterhawks then started to pressure aggressively and got on the scoreboard late in the period on a goal by Morgan Steele to head into the intermission down 3-1. East Kings scored again early in the 3rd when Brandon Conrad rifled a shot top shelf to pull within one. With about 8 minutes to go East Kings took a 5-minute penalty and killed off the first 3 minutes when Liverpool scored, only to find out that the penalty was only for 2 minutes. However the goal still stood and the Winterhawks continued to press when Jeff Lawrence, on the power play, walked in from the right side and buried the puck thru the 5 hole with just over 2 ½ minutes to play. With the goaltender pulled and an extra attacker on the ice East Kings pressured relentlessly but failed to find the back of the twine as Liverpool won 4-3.
Assists for East Kings were awarded to Chris Chute with 2 while singles went to Adam Brewster, Ryan Murphy, Bret Garby and Evan Wittenberg. Ian Brown played very strong between the pipes stopping 36 of the 40 shots he faced.
Next up for the Winterhawks is a best 2 of 3 series against the Greenwood Bombers to start the march to Provincials. Game 1 will be tomorrow, Saturday, 1:15pm at Acadia before travelling to Greenwood the following Saturday for a 7:45 pm start. Come on out and support local Midget 'A' hockey, it's free and you won't be disappointed.
