Midget 'A' Winterhawks Defeat South Shore Opponents
East Kings Midget 'A' team played three games last weekend against South Shore opponents. First up was Liverpool. The game was a tight checking affair with stellar goaltending at both ends. The Winterhawks scored first when Evan Warner, our goaltender, made a save and Jeff Lawrence gobbled up the rebound and fired the puck up ice. Ryan Murphy won a foot race to the puck and cut in on goal and slid the puck under the net minder to head into intermission up 1-0. The Winterhawks scored early in the third when Ryan Murphy passed the puck back to Chris Chute who made an end-to-end rush and narrowly missed scoring but Morgan Steele was there to pounce on the loose puck and did a quick wrap around. Liverpool scored late in the third but East Kings held on for a 2-1 victory.
The Winterhawks then faced off against Lunenburg at Acadia on Saturday. East Kings came out flying and were up 3-0 after one period of play. Ian Brown held Lunenburg off the score sheet until they scored late in the second and then East Kings scored another in the 3rd as they defeated Lunenburg 4-1. Leading the way for the Winterhawks was Morgan Steele with 2 goals while Chris Moore had 2(1-1), Mike Sponagle 1(1-0) and Ryan Murphy, Jeff Lawrence, Chris Chute, Corey Chapman and Travis Sanford were each awarded single assists.
The Winterhawks then travelled to Lunenburg on Sunday for a heated rematch. It was a tight checking affair for the first half of the 1st period until East Kings scored and before the 1st period ended East Kings were up 5-0. The Winterhawks also dominated the second period on the score sheet as they added 3 more and headed into the dressing room up 8-0. Goaltending duties were split between Evan Warner and Ian Brown who had to make several key saves throughout the game. The 3rd period was very rough but the Winterhawks held their own and proved that they could play the physical game as well as the offensive game and went on to defeat Lunenburg 8-0. Pointgetters for East Kings were Ethan Bent with 5(2-3), Travis Sanford 4(1-3), Mike Sponagle 3(2-1), Morgan Steele 3(2-1) and Adam Brewster 2(1-1). Adding assists were Ryan Murphy with 3 while Jeff Lawrence and Bret Garby each had 2.
Next up for the Winterhawks is the Midget 'A' team from Bridgewater at Acadia on Saturday the 10th at 3:50pm before travelling to Greenwood on Sunday the 11th for a 7pm start. See you there.
