Midget 'A' Winterhawks Go 2-2 at Halifax Hawks Tournament
The East Kings Winterhawks Midget A team travelled to Halifax over the Christmas break to participate in the annual Halifax Hawks Tournament. Although unsuccessful in their quest to bring home a medal the coaching staff feel that the tournament has helped the team in preparing for the road to Provincials.
The first game featured a rubber match against the Sackville Flyers. Despite out-shooting the Flyers 26-15 the only player to find the twine was Morgan Steele on a power play set-up by Ryan Murphy and Jeff Lawrence. That would be enough however as game MVP, Evan Warner, preserved his second shutout of the season and East Kings won 1-0.
Game two saw the Winterhawks come out flat and provide Ian Brown very little defensive zone support. The game was tied 1-1 after one but the Chebucto Spartans scored 3 times in the second and the Winterhawks only tallied once in the third as Chebucto won 4-2. Game MVP was Ethan Bent who scored his first two goals of the season while both Ryan Murphy and Morgan Steele had two assists.
Game three featured an all Valley match up as East Kings took on the West Hants Warriors. Despite a solid game between the pipes by Evan Warner and a goal by Evan Wittenberg, assisted by Andy Clement and Bret Garby, the Warriors pulled out the win on a goal, his second of the night, by Jordan Allen with under 3 minutes to play. Ryan Murphy was named the Game MVP as East Kings lost 2-1.
Game 4 was a tough game for East Kings. With their backs against the wall, they needed to win against Halifax in order to have a chance to advance to the medal round. Adam Brewster opened the scoring in the first on a nice set-up by Ryan Murphy and Morgan Steele while Ryan Murphy scored in the second with assists awarded to Andy Clement and Mike Sponagle. Ian Brown, Game MVP, recorded his first shutout of the season as East Kings defeated Halifax 2-0. The Winterhawks did not advance to the medal round however, but came away knowing that they could go toe to toe against the Central Minor Hockey League opponents and only allowed 6 goals in 4 games.
