Wittenberg and Brewster Record Hat Tricks

East Kings played host to the Sackville Flyers Midget 'A' team last Saturday. This was the second of three meetings scheduled between the two teams with Sackville winning the first game 4-1 two weeks ago.

The Winterhawks have been working extremely hard the past few practices and it seems the hard work is starting to pay off. On the opening face-off East Kings penetrated the Flyers zone and took the play to them out-shooting their opponent 22-8. This onslaught resulted in all three lines chipping in with at least one goal and put East Kings up 4-0 after one.

The second period was a little closer as East Kings applied 19 shots towards the Flyers net while Sackville responded with 15 of their own. Evan Warner played outstanding in goal the first half while Ian Brown held his own in the second half only being scored on twice in 22 shots. East Kings added 3 more in the second and led 7-1 after two periods of play.

When a game is as lopsided in score as this one was, things usually start to get chippy and this one was no exception. Both teams traded goals in the third and the play got a little rough but in the end the Winterhawks prevailed and defeated Sackville 8-2. The rubber match between these two teams will be the 26th of December, 4pm, at the Forum to open the Halifax Hawks Midget 'A' Christmas tournament. The coaching staff realizes that this game will not be an easy one and will not take anything for granted.

Leading the way for the Winterhawks were two outstanding performances by Evan Wittenberg with his first hat trick of the year and Adam Brewster with his second hat trick in the past two games. Other point-getters were Travis Sanford with 3(0-3), Ryan Murphy 3(0-3), Morgan Steele 3(0-3) and Brandon Conrad with 2(1-1). Chris Chute and Chris Moore each chipped in with a pair of assists while Brandon Benjamin had a goal and Andy Clement and Mike Sponagle each added single assists.

To date the Winterhawks have had 4 hat tricks, two by Adam Brewster and 1 by Evan Wittenberg, Morgan Steele and Ryan Murphy. This is just a testament of a well balanced attack and the unselfish play of the team as a whole.

The Winterhawks play their second game of the Halifax Hawks tournament on the 27th at noon at Centennial arena against the Chebucto Spartans then play again at 4pm at the Metro Center against West Hants. The fourth game has them play at 1pm, 28 Dec, at Dalhousie arena and if successful will either play for the Bronze at 7pm or go for the gold at 8:30pm, also at Dalhousie.

The Players and Coaching Staff want to wish everyone at the Advertiser and all of their readers a Very Merry Christmas and a Safe and Happy New Year.
