Winterhawks Rebound Against the 'AAA' Mariners
The East Kings Winterhawks Midget 'A' team is one of 8 teams from the East Kings Association gearing up for their final hockey tournament of the year in SEDMHA. Coming off a disappointing, yet hard fought Provincials, the Midget 'A' team directed their focus on a Minor Midget 'AAA' team from Yarmouth.
Game one versus Yarmouth featured the return of Adam Brewster to the line up and he didn't disappoint. Anchoring the power play and penalty kill he played well, never seeming to miss a beat. Despite having only nine skaters in the line up and playing both goaltenders, the Winterhawks took the play to the Mariners.
There was no scoring in the first but at the 6 minute mark of the second Morgan Steele converted a pass from Ryan Murphy and Ethan Bent to put the Winterhawks up 1-0. The game remained that way until early in the third when Chris Moore fed Ryan Murphy who put a shot on net. The goaltender stopped the initial shot but Jeff Lawrence screamed in from the point and found the twine putting East Kings up 2-0. The Mariners rallied late in the third and scored a goal but the Winterhawks prevailed, winning 2-1.
The next game was much like the first, with a lot of scoring chances and stellar goaltending from both teams. East Kings opened the scoring late in the first when Travis Sanford and Ethan Bent assisted on a highlight reel goal by Andy Clement who gathered the puck behind the goal line and skated across the front of the crease and deposit the puck low into the short side.
The Mariners replied with 2 goals of their own in the 2nd sandwiched by a power play marker by Adam Brewster on a nice set up by Morgan Steele and Ryan Murphy. There would be no scoring in the third as both goalies shut the door and the teams skated to a 2-2 tie. Both Ian Brown and Evan Warner had outstanding performances between the pipes splitting duties each game and allowing only a total of 3 goals.
Game one in SEDMHA pitted the Winterhawks against the Halifax Hawks last night. The result was unknown at the time of this printing. The only time these two teams have met this season was at the Halifax Hawks tournament with East Kings winning 1-0.
Stay tuned next week for the final report of the season of the East Kings Midget 'A' Winterhawks as we reflect on the SEDMHA tournament and some highlights of the season.
