Atom A Winterhawks Begin 2004 Wearing Gold!
A couple of versions of the winning team! Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge The Atom A Winterhawks kicked into high gear this past weekend at the annual Middleton Atom Rep. Tournament. They kicked off an exciting weekend by downing the Kentville Canadiens by a score of 5-0 on Friday night in the Kingston Arena. They continued their dominating play in the round robin by dismantling the Bridgewater Hawks by a score of 14-0 on Saturday afternoon in Lawrencetown. Unfortunately, the downside to coasting through two relatively easy games showed in the Winterhawk's third and final round robin game when the Dartmouth Whalers outskated and outworked the Winterhawks on their way to an easy 6-1 win over the Winterhawks in Middleton.
Their 2 - 1 record left the Winterhawks in second place in their division after the round robin and as a result, facing the first place team from the other division, the Berwick Bruins, in Sunday morning's crossover semi-final. In the semi-final, the Winterhawks skated with renewed focus and ended Berwick's day early as they worked their way to a 6-1 victory. The great team effort exerted by the Winterhawks was emphasized by the fact that six different players contributed goals in the victory. Chad Marshall was outstanding in the Winterhawk's net and as a result, earned game MVP honours.
The semi-final victory vaulted the Winterhawks into the noontime championship game against the winner of the other semi-final, the Dartmouth Whalers. The rematch between these two teams was a very different affair than the round robin match-up. The Winterhawks hit the ice determined that they would not be outworked this time around and they were not. The Winterhawks played a solid game shutting down Dartmouth's offense through unyielding defence and outstanding goaltending. Again the scoring was well distributed with three different players chipping in goals as the Winterhawks downed the Whalers by a score of 3-1 to win the championship. Coleman Ueffing earned game MVP honours for East Kings with his outstanding goaltending.
