Atom A Winterhawks Win Gold in Greenwood!
The Atom A Winterhawks struck tournament gold for the second time in 2004 at the annual Greenwood March Break Tournament this past weekend.
Despite the fact that the Atom Rep. division featured several strong teams, the Winterhawks pushed through the round robin portion of the tournament undefeated. In their first game, the guys handed the Shelburne AA Flames a 3-2 loss. The Winterhawk's MVP in this game was Justin Clowry. In their second contest, the Winterhawks overwhelmed a short-staffed Digby team, outscoring the opponent by a score of 12-3. Eric Rand was awarded the MVP prize for this game. In their third and final round robin game, the Winterhawks faced a determined Chester Ravens team. This was a very close contest but the Winterhawks prevailed once again, winning by a score of 2-1. The Winterhawk's MVP for this game was awarded to Ethan Gerrits. Their 3-0 round robin record put the Winterhawks into the championship game vs. the Greenwood Bombers. The Bombers rolled through their division of the round robin with two wins (vs. Bridgewater and Berwick) and a tie (vs. Yarmouth).
The championship game was an exciting, fast paced affair with the Bombers carrying the play early. Greenwood held early leads of 1-0 and 2-1. However, following a scenario that East Kings fans have seen time and time again this season, the Winterhawks got stronger and stronger as the game progressed. The boys took their first lead in the game about ten minutes into the second period (3-2) and didn't look back. In the end, the Winterhawks overwhelmed the skilled Bombers squad by a score of 6-3. Sam Brodeur picked up MVP honours for the championship game.
The coaches and parents of the team were treated to stellar goaltending performances over the course of the tournament by both goalies, Chad Marshall and Coleman Ueffing. They also witnessed rock solid defence and an impressive, balanced attack by all three of the team's forward lines. Nine different players contributed goals for the team during the tournament!
The coaches and manager of the team couldn't be more proud of the effort these boys put into a total TEAM EFFORT! Congratulations Winterhawks!!
