This meeting was called by reps of minor hockey to clarify the proposal by Fred Stockall and the Rec Committee for our takeover of the canteen.
We had previously been advised that a 3,000.00 fee would be required but had many questions as to what this would cover and if indeed, it was a realistic amount.
Fred gave us a breakdown of his 2000-2001 canteen costs with a bottom line profit of 3,383.00. He also advised that the last financial statement he has is 1998. Since then, he has kept his own records on finances. He advised us that the cost became prohibitive so he discontinued formal statements. He will, however, provide Carrie, EKMHA’s treasurer, with a breakdown of last year’s accounts.
Other items to remember were:
Rec Committee will look after: Garbage and oil disposal
Maintenance of equipment-fryer etc
Electricity & heat
Cleaning of ducts for fryer
Rink is not on a “demand meter”- this was discontinued by NSP about 10 years ago.
We can use cash register, coffee maker. Nestle owns hot chocolate machine. Fred will throw in 2-3 jugs of cooking oil and several leftover cans of hot chocolate mix.
We can takeover Pepsi coolers-they are under contract with Pepsi and therefore only Pepsi products can be put in them. We could fill and get profits.
EKMHA can change locks and have full run of the canteen. Fred will have a key for security reasons. Rink staff will not have access to canteen.
Payment of 3,000 is flexible. Minor Hockey can pick when to pay. This amount would cover 1 full year (Oct-Oct).
An agreement should be in writing.
Other events at arena: Dog Shows. 4H-every 2 years, Soccer may provide opportunities for sales.
After canteen questions were dealt with, Carrie and Cathy left and we spent some time on our rink renovation project.
Dalteck has still not formally notified us of the results of their inspection of our arena. We suspect that is due to the fact that students conducted it. Fred indicated that he had positive feedback from the person who conducted the work and Dave has been in contact with Mike Trenacity who indicated that we should be notified soon.
Frank identified that we are tentatively scheduling the inside insulation for as soon as possible after we get a favourable report. This work can be done while the ice is in.
Joe was checking on a de-humidifier.
It is felt that these two things will make the rink warmer, less damp and safer.
Fred advised us that the roof does not leak and that maintenance has been done on the outside this summer. Sealing, bolting etc.
Basically, the Rec Committee is ready to proceed but is more comfortable to wait for the OK from Dalteck in case some unforeseen situation presents itself and needs immediate attention and money.
We spent some time talking about access to the warm room. Fred’s concerns were the cost of electricity and the potential for vandalism.
After some discussion, we decided to: a) Fred will check with electrician to find out about installing a programmable thermostat for the warm room so that the times and temperature can be pre-set. b) Peter suggested that Minor Hockey could inform parents and children in our association of the availability of the Warm Room and the Rules of Conduct that must be followed. November was our target for opening.
