EKMHA Annual General Meeting held May 8, 2002 7:00 pm at Canning Arena

Prior to the commencement of the meeting, family of the late Jack Spindler awarded trophies in Jack's memory to one East Kings' player within each age group. This is a new award provided by the Spindler family as a living memorial to Jack. Jack was involved with hockey in Canning at all levels from minor hockey to old-timers. He contributed much to the success of our programmes over the years and will be remembered for his dedication, enthusiasm and love of the game.The trophies are awarded to a player who best demonstrates that enthusiasm, participation and love of the game.

This year the Jack Spindler Memorial Trophies were awarded to:

• Ruel Garby - Bantam
• Morgan MacMahon - Midget Female

Meeting was called to order at 7:25 pm

19 members in attendance.

The Agenda was reviewed.

Minutes of the 2001 AGM were read.

Motioned by Susan Surette-Draper, seconded by George Curry, the minutes be approved as read.

Announcements

Brian informed the meeting of the EKMHA Email List and encouraged people to signup. The list is used to relay information and announcements to members.

Coaching Applications - we want to fill coaching positions before hockey starts. Last year the process was late. Applications received by May 10 will be considered.

Hockey Nova Scotia Minor Hockey Council (HNSMHC) AGM will be held June 15 at the Citadel Inn in Halifax
Hockey Nova Scotia (HNS) AGM will be held June 16 at the Citadel Inn in Halifax. There will be no workshops offered this year. Anyone may attend.

A 50/50 lottery is being organized with KAMHA. It can potentially be a very lucrative fundraiser. Details of how this will be set up have not been set. We need someone to organize this with Kentville. Kevin Higgins asked if all players were required to sell 50/50 tickets. He had concern that some kids/families didn't believe in gambling, etc. Brian reitereated that plans had not been formalized about how the lottery would function. George Curry advised that in New Glasgow, where this is a huge source of revenue, kids get $.10 for each ticket they sell. John Curry commented that he didn't think it was compulsory that all kids sell the tickets. Brian again advised that many options are available for the operation of the lottery and the process has yet to be organized.

President's Report - Highlights of the year

15 teams Novice through Bantam
Many reasons to celebrate: from personal growth of each child to the various games to championships the teams won.

Association accomplishments

The East Kings Minor Hockey Association website http://ca.geocities.com/eastkingsminorhockey/ went live in November 2000. Since that time the site has been visited approximately 5000 times. The website has been used as an information vehicle to keep members informed by providing minutes of executive meetings, news and contact information.
Members and other interested parties may also join the EKMHA Email list. By joining the list, visitors will be informed immediately when new minutes and information are available. To join just complete the online form (http://ca.geocities.com/eastkingsminorhockey/emaillist.html). To submit information to be included on the website, please email [email protected] Also remember that EKMHA has an online swap shop (http://ca.geocities.com/eastkingsminorhockey/SwapShop/). Post gear for sale or gear wanted. Spread the word to other associations.

Policy manual - Currently in draft form. Anticipation of completion by registration. Registration format will change for the fall. Summer mail out will have the details.

Registration appears to be on a down ward trend.

Reports

Financial

Carrie Hemmings circulated a Financial Statement (.gif). In June we will know what monies will be received from grant applications. This statement does not include an accounting of the canteen or grant monies that may come.The Association lost approximately $10,000 thru the year. Bingo revenue decreased this year. Ice billing problems from Acadia were costly.

Kathy Curry advised that she was waiting to meet with Fred Stockhall to discuss payment of the $3000 canteen rental fee. If that fee is required to be paid, the canteen will break even. Brian explained that when EKMHA negotiated the take over of the canteen, no formal financial statements were available. The $3000 annual rental fee was based on the rink manager's estimations of previous revenue and expenses, which proved to be inaccurate. We hope to negotiate a rental fee payable based on real figures. The canteen missed opportunities to be open due to problems getting people to work. Lorraine Higgins commented that there needs to be more publicity to make people aware of the benefit to the Association, of the canteen operation.

Friends of the Rink

George Curry reported briefly that the committee was waiting for the structural analysis report from the Dalhousie group. The selling of signage, mapping for signs, etc. was underway. Peter Hayes is the Chair of this committee.

New Business

Stevens

Thane Stevens described his family's situation. The Stevens moved to the area 3 years ago and have three children playing hockey. They registered in Kentville, thinking that was the right place. Kentville did not check to see if the Stevens were in their jurisdiction. The children played in KAMHA for two years. One child made a AAA team. It was then that KAMHA recognized that the Stevens lived outside their boundaries. They should have registered in East Kings. Mr. Stevens asked if there were some sanctioned way that would allow his children to play legally in Kentville along with their schoolmates. Brian informed the Stevens that if EKMHA were to write a letter of intent to Kentville to discuss a boundary change, Marion Dowell (Nova District Rep) would likely allow the Stevens children to play in Kentville. Kevin Higgins asked if this matter had been brought to the executive previously and how Kentville thought about the boundary issue. Brian told him that yes it had been brought to the executive and the executive was not in favour of changing boundaries for individual circumstance. Kentville doesn't mind changing the boundary in this particular case.
A letter of intent requires 10 people to support the issue.
It is likely that HNS will force an amalgamation of East Kings, Kentville and West Hants within the next couple of years. There are only six individual assocations remaining in Nova Scotia: Valley (East Kings, West Hants, Kentville) and South Shore (Chester, Bridgewater, Lunenburg).

Brian will contact Marion Dowell and Jack King (KAMHA President) to discuss the letter of intent.

Dixon

Beth and Andy Dixon asked to share their feelings about their son's involvement with EKMHA. They feel that through the last eight years, the experience has gone from bad to horrendous. The process of player selection for rep teams is dysfunctional and unfair. Their son has been a leading scorer and MVP at the house level, yet was not selected for a rep team. The son has become frustrated with the level of play and charged with many penalities and suspensions. He has become a "marked man" to referees. This year it was reported to the executive that the son's current team did not want him to continue playing with them because of his poor attitude and behaviour. The executive decided to suspend the child for the remainder of the year. The child was to be informed by registered letter or personal delivery the next day. This letter was not received until 2 days before the SEDMHA tournament. The child was of course upset that he would not get to play in the tournament he had been looking forward to.

Change in Constitution Bylaw 21

Brian suggested that Bylaw 21 be changed to allow a 66% majority to carry a vote rather than the existing 75% stating that it is too difficult to attain a 75% vote, hense required changes are almost impossible to attain. Kevin Higgins commented that it is supposed to be difficult to change a constitution. They are written as guidelines to be followed through time. Jim Murphy commented that many large organizations often have a lesser number considered majority. Paul Murphy indicated that 3/4 is not a stand fast number in other associations. 66% is a good majority.

Motion by George Curry, second by Mike Cochrane, that EKMHA change Bylaw 21 to replace 75% with 66%.
